Tragic Incident Details Emerge in Court Proceedings
A two-year-old boy lost his life after falling into a fast-flowing river while walking with relatives in Leicester earlier this year, according to testimony presented during an ongoing inquest. Xielo Maruziva entered the River Soar around 5pm on February 18, 2024, within Aylestone Meadows nature reserve near Marsden Lane.
Circumstances of the Accident
Evidence presented to jurors revealed the toddler had been walking several steps ahead of two aunts on Packhorse Bridge when he suddenly disappeared from view. At the time of the incident, water levels remained elevated following days of heavy rainfall, creating hazardous conditions along the designated flood plain.
One aunt, Nicole Maruziva, described through tears how the child took “what looked like a step” before vanishing. “I ran to where he’d been standing and saw the water below,” she recounted, explaining how the bridge’s waist-high walls obscured the drop-off point.
Desperate Rescue Attempts
Despite not knowing how to swim, Maruziva immediately entered the chest-deep water searching for her nephew. “I shouted for help while trying to feel for him with my arms, but the current pulled me under,” she stated. Family members and emergency services initiated extensive search operations that continued until June 6 when the child’s body was recovered.
Investigators confirmed the area lacked warning signage about potential flood dangers. Body camera footage reviewed during proceedings captured family members speculating the child might have slipped near the bridge’s edge.
Family Remembers ‘Fearless’ Child
Xielo’s mother, Kayela Smith, remembered her son as an “independent, curious and adventurous” child who had recently started nursery school. “The day he was born was the best of my life,” she shared in an emotional statement. “He was my best friend and my whole world.”
The child’s father, Bradley Maruziva, described jumping into the river himself during rescue efforts, later requiring treatment for hypothermia. “Our energy matched – he made me feel like a big kid again,” he wrote about his son. “We all miss Xielo terribly.”
Forensic pathologist Dr. Frances Hollingbury confirmed the cause of death as drowning following water immersion. The inquest continues to examine safety measures and circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
