TOWIE’s Dark Legacy: Deaths, Addiction, Crime Plague Stars

Published on

The Only Way Is Essex premiered 16 years ago, drawing millions with glimpses into the glamorous lives of Essex’s elite. Stars like Mark Wright, Lauren Goodger, James Argent, and Sam Faiers delivered drama, catchphrases, and pop culture moments. Yet off-screen realities have turned grim, marked by sudden deaths, addiction battles, violent assaults, criminal convictions, and business collapses.

Jake Hall’s Fatal Accident

Jake Hall, who joined TOWIE in series 14 through 18 in 2015, died at age 35 after smashing his head through a glass door at a rented villa in Majorca. Police discovered him in a pool of blood from severe head wounds caused by glass shards. Investigators pursue a theory of accidental impact following an all-night party that continued at the property.

He leaves behind eight-year-old daughter River, shared with Misse Beqiri. Representatives for Misse Beqiri stated: “At this time, Misse’s focus is on supporting and protecting their child as they come to terms with this devastating loss. The family are asking for privacy, compassion and respect while they grieve privately.”

Other Sudden Deaths

Just before Hall’s passing, former TOWIE cast member Jordan Wright drowned in a Phuket drainage canal on March 14. Authorities repatriated his body to Essex for a post-mortem at Basildon Hospital. An inquest opened last month and adjourned to September 14. CCTV captured Wright sprinting erratically to his hotel hours earlier, with police noting unclear circumstances possibly involving others.

In January 2021, businessman Mick Norcross, who debuted in TOWIE’s second season, died by suicide at 57. His son Kirk, an original cast member, found him and relapsed into cocaine addiction amid the father’s financial strains, including a £3.6 million bank loan.

Last year, Ricky Rayment shared news of his sister Lisa Kempley’s death at 56. He posted: “RIP my beautiful sister. You got the send off you deserved. Love you forever.” A statement on her business page read: “We are saddened to announce that our lovely Lisa passed away on Friday 25th July. We know she was truly loved by friends and clients alike and therefore want to extend an open invitation to attend her funeral service.”

Addiction Battles

James ‘Arg’ Argent has openly battled alcohol, cocaine addiction, weight issues, and mental health challenges since TOWIE fame. Suspended in 2014 after failing a drug test, he sought treatment in Thailand in 2016. A 2019 relapse post-breakup with Gemma Collins led to hospitalizations from overdoses.

Argent described psychosis during cocaine binges, barricading himself for days amid paranoia that walls caved in. He progressed to sobriety after 2019 rock bottom, underwent gastric sleeve surgery in 2021 losing 14 stone, and later a tummy tuck. In 2023, he admitted shoving girlfriend Nicoline Artursson during a Spain dispute, earning a six-month suspended sentence and two-year restraining order.

Kirk Norcross marks five years sober from alcohol and cocaine.

Violent Nightclub Assaults

In 2011, Sam and Billie Faiers endured a brutal girl gang attack in a nightclub. Sam sustained black eyes, a split nose, bruises, and scratches, recounting: “I really thought I was going to die. They just came at me like a herd of elephants. It’s just a blur. I was being so violently attacked by so many girls there was nothing I could do but curl up into a ball. Then I passed out.” Billie was beaten and robbed, with a second ambush in Repton Park where Sam added: “Within seconds of getting out of the cab I saw at least nine girls running towards me across the grass… I was smashed to the ground and just beaten. I was punched in the face and kicked in the head.”

In 2016, Jake Hall nearly lost a kidney after a glass bottle stabbing at Aqwa Mist in Marbella during a brawl, requiring intensive care.

Partners’ Criminal Acts

Ferne McCann’s partner Arthur Collins, father of her daughter Sunday, perpetrated a 2017 acid attack in Dalston, injuring 16 with burns and temporarily blinding three. He fled but was captured, claiming initially unawareness of the acid, later admitting knowledge. Convicted of grievous bodily harm counts, he received 20 years, upheld on appeal.

Lauren Goodger’s ex Joey Morrison drew 16 years in 2010 for a postman-disguised burglary, caught with cocaine and a luxury vehicle. His brother Stephen died stabbed in 2020 after a car chase.

Another ex, Jake McLean, dated Goodger from 2012-2016 and died in 2022 driving off a Turkish cliff with TOWIE’s Yazmin Oukhellou injured. Inquest cited alcohol over the limit and cocaine, with Coroner Dr. Shirley Ratcliffe noting skull fractures and brain damage. Oukhellou reflected: “Now I’m just wondering how the hell did my partner die while I’ve survived? It’s made me look at life totally differently.”

Imprisonments Among Cast

Mike Hassini, on TOWIE from 2015-2018, received six years nine months in 2021 for handling £70,000 cocaine. Police intercepted a handover, finding drugs, cash, and equipment at properties. Released in 2023 after two years, he pleaded guilty to supply conspiracy and related charges.

Failed Business Ventures

Gemma Collins’ boutique amassed £76,000 debts, leading to a 2020 three-year directorship ban despite her investments. A spokesperson noted: “Gemma believed her accountants were taking care of all financial aspects… The Insolvency Service found there was no personal benefit.”

Pete Wicks’ PW Promotions sank £100,000 into debt shortly after launch. Other firms like Unkempt and TCDOR remain dormant.

Joey Essex’s 2013 Brentwood boutique Fusey closed amid local backlash, shifting online before dissolution in 2018. He countered: “I also hope the other traders in Crown Street can continue to be successful when we close as I appreciate a few were unhappy with the thousands of fans that visit my shop.”
