Coastal Community Faces Critical Infrastructure Damage
The Town of Trepassey has declared a state of emergency following severe storm damage that destroyed critical coastal defenses and blocked emergency access routes. Municipal officials confirmed the emergency declaration was issued Tuesday afternoon as powerful waves continue to threaten the community.
Breakwater Destroyed, Main Road Compromised
Mayor Wanda Waddleton stated that nearly all of the town’s breakwater has been obliterated by the storm. “Only a few sections remain standing, but their structural integrity is highly questionable,” Waddleton explained. “The protective barrier has been completely destroyed, leaving us fully exposed to the ocean’s force. Waves are now crashing directly onto our primary roadway.”
The extensive road damage has severed emergency vehicle access to the lower coastal area of Trepassey. Officials expressed grave concerns about potential utility failures, with Waddleton warning: “If we lose water service, electrical power, or communication systems, we’ll face catastrophic circumstances.”
Emergency Response Underway
Contractors are currently clearing debris from affected roads while municipal crews work to establish temporary protections. Authorities hope to lift the state of emergency by Wednesday morning if weather conditions improve.
A reception center has been activated at Trepassey Town Hall to assist residents, though no evacuations have been required thus far. Engineers are scheduled to assess the damage Wednesday to determine necessary repairs.
Longstanding Infrastructure Concerns
The community had anticipated completing a new breakwater this year following severe damage from previous storms. Provincial authorities had announced a $1 million investment last November to reconstruct the vital coastal defense structure. While materials arrived in January, construction never commenced.
“We’ve waited nearly three years for this essential protection,” Mayor Waddleton stated. “Now we’re facing devastating new damage with no clear timeline for repairs.” Meteorological reports confirm the region experienced hurricane-force winds and unprecedented wave activity throughout Monday night and Tuesday.
