Trump Approves Iran’s 2026 World Cup Spot Amid Tensions

Published on

President Donald Trump endorses Iran’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to unfold across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, despite ongoing U.S.-Iran tensions.

Diplomatic Push to Replace Iran with Italy

U.S. special envoy Paolo Zampolli recently proposed replacing Iran with Italy, which missed qualification for a third straight tournament. Zampolli made the suggestion to both President Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Italy, the 2021 European champions, failed to secure one of Europe’s 16 spots. Iran earned its place as one of eight teams from the Asian Football Confederation.

Trump Backs FIFA’s Decision

FIFA President Gianni Infantino affirms Iran’s attendance, stating, ‘the Iranian team is coming, for sure.’ He reiterated this at FIFA’s Congress.

Trump supports Infantino’s position, saying, ‘Well if Gianni said it, I’m OK.’ When questioned about a potential Iranian victory, he added, ‘If they win we’ll have to worry about that. I’m going to have to worry about that one. You know what, let them play. Gianni is fantastic, he’s a friend of mine, he talked about it, I said, “You do whatever you want. You can have them, you don’t have to have them.” They probably have a good team. Do they have a good team, do you have any idea?’

Trump dismissed concerns, noting, ‘It would be hard to believe actually. But let them play, right?’

Iran Confirms Commitment

Iran’s soccer federation confirms its intent to compete in the tournament.

FIFA holds sole discretion under its rules to replace a team if it boycotts. The organization previously used this authority to include Inter Miami in last year’s Club World Cup, allowing Lionel Messi to participate.

Tournament Schedule

The 2026 World Cup kicks off on June 11, with the final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Iran opens Group play against New Zealand on June 15, followed by Belgium on June 21 and Egypt on June 26.
