Trump Attends UFC 327 with Ivanka, Rubio Amid Iran Talks

Published on

President Trump attended UFC 327 in Miami with daughters Tiffany and Ivanka, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and UFC promoter Dana White, while Vice President J.D. Vance engages in high-level peace talks with Iranian officials in Pakistan.

The crowd response appeared largely positive during the Paramount+ broadcast. Trump paused to greet UFC announcers Jon Anik and Joe Rogan ahead of the main fight card. “Great to have you in the building tonight, Mr. President,” Anik stated.

Historical Precedents for Presidential Sports Appearances

Trump’s outing echoes past presidents attending sports events during military tensions. George W. Bush threw the first pitch before Game 3 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium shortly after the 9/11 attacks. George H.W. Bush, however, deferred to his wife Barbara for the honors in 1990 amid the Gulf War with Iraq.

Public Criticism Emerges

Despite the warm reception at the event, Trump drew sharp online backlash. Critics on X questioned his priorities, with one asking, “Does he know he started a war? Time for UFC I guess?” Another remarked, “I mean the world is on fire. But hey let’s use some tax money to attend a UFC fight.” Succinct jabs included: “Hard at work for the American people.”

Dana White had previewed Trump’s presence during pre-fight promotions. “It’s good to be back in Miami,” White told podcaster Adin Ross. “Yeah, I’m pumped. We got the big guy coming on Saturday, too. He’s coming.”

Skepticism arose given the three-party talks between the U.S., Iran, and Pakistan, which began Saturday under a fragile two-week ceasefire disrupting global oil and financial markets. Before departing for Miami, Trump addressed China’s reported threats to supply air defense systems to Iran. “If China does that, China is gonna have big problems,” he stated at Joint Base Andrews.

Trump’s Longstanding UFC Ties

Trump’s affinity for UFC and White runs deep. Since 2015, White has spoken at the last three Republican National Conventions on Trump’s behalf. “His base is Trump’s base,” Kellyanne Conway, Trump’s former White House counselor, observed. “And Trump’s base is his base.”

White has dismissed speculation about a White House role. “Donald Trump is one of my very good friends,” he said through a spokesperson. “He did a great job in his last term as president, and I know he will do an even better job the next four years. I have no personal political aspirations.”

Trump frequently appears cageside at UFC events, drawing enthusiastic support from fans and fighters.

UPCOMING White House UFC Event

On June 14, Trump hosts White and UFC on the White House south lawn to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary, coinciding with the President’s birthday. The card features a lightweight title fight between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje, plus five more bouts, for 5,000 invitees. An additional 80,000 tickets allow viewing from a nearby park on a massive screen.

Joe Rogan, attending as announcer, expressed reservations. “Yeah, I’m not thrilled about that,” he told comedian Mark Normand on his podcast. “Yeah, I’ll be there but I’m not thrilled about it, it doesn’t seem like a wise idea.”

Rogan’s relationship with Trump is complex. His podcast hosted Trump’s three-hour interview and endorsement before the 2024 election. Recently, however, Rogan has critiqued the Iran war as “crazy,” alongside comments on immigration policies and Justice Department handling of Epstein files. He called the event, UFC Freedom 250, a “gimmick.”

“People are criticizing the card, but if it was any other card, it’s a great card,” Rogan noted. “It’s just they’re criticizing it because they said it was gonna be the ‘greatest card of all time’ and it’s also just gonna be a security nightmare.” He raised weather concerns: “Also they’re fighting outside. What if it rains? What if it’s hot? You’re in the middle of June, June in D.C. can get pretty warm, that affects fighters.”

White historically avoids outdoor fights. Rogan recounted one in Abu Dhabi: “We only did one outside fight that I was part of and that was in Abu Dhabi and it was a nightmare. It was really hot and there were bugs flying around the size of f***ing birds, it was crazy.”

Trump confirmed his attendance in an interview with Jake Paul. “It’s going to be amazing at the White House,” he said. “And Dana [White] is a great guy. He’s a good fan of yours, you know. Dana is a good guy. The best. I mean, there’s nobody like him.”
