England endured a disappointing loss to Japan shortly after a 1-1 draw with Uruguay at the same stadium. The team lacked attacking flair in both matches without captain Harry Kane, who sat out the first game for rest and suffered an injury in the second.
Squad Selection Challenges Ahead
These results give Thomas Tuchel much to consider for his key World Cup squad choices this summer. He rejects the idea that pressure has overwhelmed certain players during their international trials.
“No, I don’t think so,” Tuchel stated. “I don’t want to engage in this discussion, because it’s very clear what we want to do and how we want to play, focusing more on the principles and execution rather than what it all means.”
“Playing for England brings pressure and noise—that’s just part of it. We must see how players adapt, and the only way is to test them out. We did that, learned from it, and now have two months ahead. The players will feature heavily in club football during that time, preparing us fully.”
When asked about uncertainties in his 26-man World Cup squad, Tuchel replied: “I don’t know. I need to reflect and then make decisions.”
Regarding full-backs, he added: “We have plenty of options and will field strong ones.”
Analyzing the Japan Defeat
Japan’s victory, clinched by Brighton forward Kaoru Mitoma’s first-half strike, represents England’s second loss under Tuchel and their first ever to an Asian opponent.
“It definitely hurts,” the German coach admitted. “Losing always stings, especially at home. We paid the price for one counter-attack in the first half. These games against tough sides are essential. With several players absent and a new formation, we experimented and must build on the lessons.”
Assessing the tactical setup, Tuchel explained: “It featured a false nine on one side; on the other flank in attack, it was a conventional nine.”
“We need these fixtures. Keep it in perspective—it’s not the end of the world. The issue isn’t false nine versus normal nine; it’s about delivering, dominating one-on-ones, and showing bravery. We can do better against a disciplined team, especially with our new system and fresh faces.”
