Retirement Redefined: A Family’s Bold Move to a French Hamlet

A British couple, Helen and Terry Diaper, aged 76, have swapped their UK retirement plans for an extraordinary venture: purchasing an entire French hamlet. They were joined in this ambitious undertaking by their daughter, Liz Murphy, 48, and her husband, David, 57, along with their two children. The family collectively acquired the rural hamlet of Lac De Maison, nestled in the Poitou-Charentes region of southwest France.

A Combined Effort for a Shared Dream

The decision to relocate was spearheaded by Liz and David, who sought an escape from the pressures of their previous lives. They persuaded Helen and Terry to join them, culminating in the purchase of six centuries-old houses, two barns, and three acres of land for a total of £450,000. To fund this significant acquisition, Helen sold her four-bedroom property, while Liz and David sold their three-bedroom home in Manchester, valued at £400,000.

Transforming a Hamlet into a Thriving Retreat

Since their move in December 2020, the family has been diligently transforming the properties. Three of the houses have been converted into holiday lets, now capable of accommodating up to 19 guests. Simultaneously, they have renovated their own living spaces and the grandparents’ home. This endeavor has allowed Helen and Terry to be actively involved in their grandchildren Tom, 14, and Charlotte, 10’s, lives, seeing them daily rather than on infrequent visits.

A More Relaxed Lifestyle and Financial Advantages

Helen, a retired senior practice nurse, ed her long-held affection for France and her desire for a significant change. “I’ve always loved France and always wanted to be here, so Terry and I decided on a big adventure and to go for it,” she stated. She also noted the palpable difference in the pace of life, describing the French ambience as less stressful and embracing the local “laid-backness.”

Terry, a retired computer programmer, admitted that leaving their comfortable life in Nottingham was initially unexpected but now views it as “one last adventure.” He highlighted the appeal of the French lifestyle, describing it as “easier going” with a pleasant culture and a notable standard of cleanliness. The family also found the French tax system to be more advantageous, particularly for pensioners, offering tax deductions for employing domestic help.

Navigating Challenges and Embracing the Future

Liz, a business owner, acknowledged that the renovation process has been demanding, involving “blood, sweat, and tears.” She stated, “We spent more than we thought we were going to. But everything we are putting into it is to future-proof it for others when they want to come and live here.” Despite the extensive work, she finds immense satisfaction in their achievement and the ability to now enjoy their surroundings more fully.

The family now lives mortgage-free. While they have invested significantly in renovations, Liz believes the effort is worthwhile for creating a future for others wishing to embrace the French countryside. They frequently host friends and family during peak seasons and make annual trips back to the UK. Looking ahead, the family plans to relocate to a more modest property to better accommodate Helen’s evolving health needs, while remaining united.

The move, driven by a desire for a slower pace of life and closer family connections, has proven to be a rewarding decision for the entire Diaper-Murphy clan, offering a unique blend of adventure, family bonding, and a fulfilling lifestyle.
