US Open Faces ‘Zoo’ Atmosphere as Influencers Disrupt Matches

Published on

The 2026 US Open is facing criticism from top tennis players who describe the atmosphere as a ‘zoo’ due to the disruptive behavior of social media influencers. Concerns are mounting that the quest for viral content is overshadowing the sport itself, leading to a decline in the traditional tennis ambiance and impacting player concentration.

Influencer Distractions Plague Matches

During a crucial moment in Naomi Osaka’s match, as she served at 4-4 in the second set after a tight tie-break, her concentration was broken by a group of influencers in a luxury suite. The group was actively posing for photographs using a bright, portable light, inadvertently distracting Osaka and prompting a warning from the chair umpire. This incident highlighted a growing sentiment among players that the tournament has become overly saturated with content creators more focused on capturing images than respecting the game.

Jessica Pegula, the top-ranked American player, voiced her frustration, stating, ‘People are down there trying to perform, and it’s their career and their job. It seems like a bit disrespectful.’ She added that the situation felt ‘a little too much’ this year, reflecting a sentiment shared by others on the tour.

US Open’s Evolving Cultural Role

The US Open has long been known for its unique New York energy and glamour, setting it apart from other Grand Slam tournaments. However, its appeal has broadened significantly, attracting a diverse crowd that includes not only tennis enthusiasts but also fashion followers, celebrities, and social media personalities. Reece Milner, Senior Strategy Manager at The Goat Agency, notes that the US Open has transformed into a significant cultural event on the New York calendar, sitting at the ‘intersection of sport, fashion, luxury, hospitality, celebrity, lifestyle and content culture.’

The tournament’s iconic elements, such as night matches, the signature Honey Deuce cocktail, and gourmet food offerings, have become recognizable social media staples, further cementing its status as a lifestyle destination. This evolution has led brands to increasingly partner with influencers, leveraging the tournament’s cultural cachet to enhance their own visibility.

Credentialing Content Creators

The US Open itself has embraced this shift, credentialing approximately 100 content creators for the 2026 tournament. Brendan McIntyre, the US Open’s head of communications, indicated that this number is expected to grow in the future, signaling the event’s commitment to integrating social media influence into its strategy.

While the presence of credentialed media and influencers focused on growing interest in the game is generally accepted, a segment of attendees is drawing criticism. These are individuals perceived to be attending primarily for a single-night experience, prioritizing the acquisition of perfect social media photos over genuine engagement with the tennis matches.

Atmosphere Shifts from Tennis to ‘Zoo’

The ambient noise and movement within the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center have become a significant issue. Unlike the hushed reverence of Wimbledon, the US Open, particularly on the main Arthur Ashe Stadium, has always had a more vibrant, energetic atmosphere. However, players report that the current level of chatter, laughter, and constant movement from fans—exacerbated by the tournament’s 2024 policy allowing ‘free fan movement’ throughout matches—has transformed the environment into something less conducive to high-level play.

‘On Ashe, you hear everything,’ Pegula observed. ‘Even when there’s dead noise, there’s still a buzz or a chatter or people talking and eating and laughing and all these different kind of emotions. You really have to do a good job of locking yourself in a bubble when you’re out there.’

French player Adrian Mannarino was more blunt in his assessment of the crowd behavior on the outer courts, describing the scene as a ‘zoo.’ He noted, ‘They come in any which way, they move around, they talk. It’s the tournament that tolerates this, and I don’t know if it’s the best idea for the game in general. There’s noise coming from everywhere.’

The issue extends to the luxury suites, where despite clear messages around the venue discouraging the use of lights and flashes for photography, such disruptions were observed during matches, including during Aryna Sabalenka’s dominant performance. The statement following the Osaka incident placed the onus on chair umpires to manage these ‘infrequent’ disruptions, a task that has proven challenging amidst the heightened activity.

Balancing Influence with Sporting Integrity

While the engagement of influencers and the resulting social media buzz undoubtedly contribute to ticket sales and the tournament’s broader cultural relevance, a growing concern is the impact on the core tennis experience. For the US Open to continue fostering genuine interest in the sport and attracting dedicated fans, maintaining a high-quality playing atmosphere on its main courts is paramount. The current trend suggests a potential conflict between embracing modern influencer culture and preserving the integrity and focus required for elite professional tennis.
