United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) preparations for the World Cup face a significant blow after striker Patrick Agyemang sustains a concerning injury. The 25-year-old forward, playing for Derby County, landed awkwardly while jumping for a ball during their 2-0 victory over Stoke City on Monday afternoon. Medical staff treated him on the field before stretchering him off in tears.
Serious Injury Concerns
Fears mount that Agyemang may have suffered an Achilles tendon injury, which could derail his World Cup aspirations. Derby County head coach John Eustace confirmed the striker underwent a scan. “He’s gone off for a scan,” Eustace said. “We’ll wait and see the results of that. Hopefully it’s not as bad as what it might be.”
Key Contender for Pochettino’s Squad
Agyemang emerges as a strong candidate for Mauricio Pochettino’s 26-man roster this summer. He scores six goals across 14 appearances for the USMNT, including in their recent 5-2 defeat to Belgium. The forward competes with Ricardo Pepi and Haji Wright for the backup striker position behind expected starter Folarin Balogun.
Pochettino, who assumed control in August 2024, experiments with lineups amid recent setbacks, such as losses to Belgium and Portugal last week. The USMNT opens the World Cup against Paraguay on June 12.
Tough Selection Process Ahead
The USMNT coach faces the challenge of trimming a large pool to 26 players. “It is going to be painful because that process… is going to be difficult to pick only 26 from 35, 40,” Pochettino stated. “Who will be there is going to be happy, who is not on the roster is going to be sad.”
He emphasized the upcoming roster as final preparation. “I think this is the end because the next roster is going to be the roster that is going to be involved,” Pochettino added. “I think it’s too many things that we need to assess and to see in the next few weeks.”
Pochettino also noted players understand the competition. “They know that we are going to see every single week, every single game, and we are going to assess one year and a half or more, and we are going to make the decision,” he said.
