Vancouver Mayor Sim Shifts Focus to Safety, Affordability for 2026 Campaign

Published on

As Vancouver’s 2026 municipal election approaches, Mayor Ken Sim has begun outlining his re-election platform, emphasizing three key priorities: public safety, affordability, and the successful hosting of the FIFA World Cup.

Public Safety and Affordability Take Center Stage

During recent public appearances, Sim has highlighted his administration’s commitment to public safety initiatives, including the hiring of 100 new police officers and the creation of Task Force Barrage to combat organized crime. ‘We made those investments, and the results show it,’ Sim stated, pointing to declining crime rates in the city.

On the affordability front, Sim has positioned himself as a fiscal conservative, advocating for property tax freezes. ‘I’m a math guy, and increasing property taxes just makes life less affordable for renters and homeowners,’ he explained, drawing a clear distinction between himself and his political opponents.

Strategic Policy Shifts

‘Leadership isn’t about getting everything perfect from day one,’ Sim remarked. ‘It’s about acknowledging where things didn’t work out as well, and pivoting.’ This philosophy has led to notable changes in his policy agenda.

Park Board Reform on Hold

After previously championing the elimination of Vancouver’s independent park board throughout 2024 and 2025, Sim has now shelved the initiative. ‘We’re not going to do it. We are way too focused right now on public safety, and making life more affordable for residents,’ he confirmed.

Bitcoin Initiative Takes Back Seat

Similarly, Sim’s earlier enthusiasm for making Vancouver a bitcoin-friendly city – which he once called ‘the greatest invention ever in human history’ – has been tempered. While maintaining the initiative’s importance, he has redirected focus to immediate community concerns.

Looking Ahead to Election Day

With the October 17 election approaching, Sim faces significant challenges. Recent polling suggests only 30 percent of residents believe the city is heading in the right direction, with just 21 percent firmly supporting Sim’s bid for a second term.

The mayor’s immediate agenda includes overseeing the city’s Official Development Plan and preparing for the FIFA World Cup. ‘Stripping out the politics, what we’re focused on is running our city well,’ Sim emphasized, though a countdown clock to election day in his office suggests the upcoming vote is never far from mind.
