Vet Reveals 5 Cat Breeds to Avoid for Health Risks

Published on

Choosing a cat as a pet requires careful consideration of lifestyle fit and breed-specific health challenges. A veterinarian with extensive experience, known online as Ben the Vet, lists five breeds he would never own due to recurring health issues observed in practice.

Ben shares his perspective in a video reaching thousands of followers: “This is just my opinion from seeing a lot of cats and their health problems. It’s not about judging anyone, but sometimes you have to say it as it is.”

Sphynx Cat

The Sphynx lacks fur and often has short or absent whiskers, which Ben views as removing core feline traits. Whiskers aid navigation and communication, while the hairless body leads to temperature regulation struggles. These cats face elevated heart disease risks and shorter lifespans.

Munchkin Cat

Short-legged Munchkins encounter mobility issues and early-onset arthritis. Ben notes: “Let’s not make life hard for them by giving them short limbs.”

Scottish Fold

Despite popularity boosted by celebrities, Scottish Folds carry a genetic disorder causing painful arthritis in young cats. Ben warns that many owners overlook these risks amid rising demand.

Savannah Cat

This hybrid of domestic cat and wild serval grows larger, stronger, and more instinct-driven. Ben recounts: “I’ve seen a few in practice and I have to say I was quite scared of them.” They prove challenging to manage indoors.

Persian Cat

Flat-faced Persians suffer breathing difficulties, eye issues, grooming problems, and frequent infections due to their structure. Ben es: “I feel really sad for these cats.”

Ben emphasizes prioritizing health and quality of life: “If you want a happy, healthy companion, buying a kitten that looks like this is not a good choice.”

The RSPCA supports this view: “Well said, Ben. We shouldn’t be breeding animals for looks over welfare. They deserve better.”

Commenters agree, with one praising domestic shorthairs: “Cannot recommend the rare and exotic, domestic shorthair cat enough! 10/10 breed.” Another adds: “There are good reasons why Sphynx and Scottish Fold are banned in the Netherlands.”
