Dog ownership thrives across Britain, with up to 40% of households owning at least one canine companion and numbers climbing steadily. Recent surveys reveal that 94% of owners view dogs as family members, while 80% regard them as their closest friends. Selecting the right breed ensures a smooth bond, minimizing issues from mismatched energy levels or boredom.
Veterinary surgeon Tom highlights three standout breeds ideal for newcomers in a recent video. He notes these choices suit varied lifestyles while offering affection and manageability.
Greyhounds
Greyhounds defy their speedy image by proving remarkably laid-back. Tom explains they adapt effortlessly to most routines, making them perfect for those seeking a large dog without high demands.
“There’s a million greyhounds out there that need a new home, and in general, they’re much lazier than you might expect,” Tom states. “They’re happy with a quick sprint or a long walk and they’ll spend a lot of their time sleeping. They’re incredibly affectionate, but they do get bad teeth, so nail down that dental care from day one.”
Labradors
Labradors rank among Britain’s most registered breeds, prized for their friendly, intelligent nature and versatility in family or service roles. They bring predictable energy to active homes with adequate space.
“The humble labrador is a solid choice,” Tom advises. “They do have some health issues, so check the hips and elbows of their parents. However, you know what you’re getting—they’re incredibly bouncy and affectionate and fit most active lifestyles.”
Border Terriers
Border terriers charm with their cheeky, upbeat personalities, thriving in urban or rural settings as loyal companions for families or singles. They require moderate exercise and face fewer health concerns than many peers.
“I absolutely love a border terrier,” Tom shares. “They are cheeky and daft and will fit so many lifestyles. They don’t need a massive amount of exercise, and the health issues they get are limited. They’re an absolute delight and an excellent choice for first-time owners.”
