Warnock Claims Houllier Blocked Liverpool Return Despite Wage Cut

Published on

Stephen Warnock alleges that Gerard Houllier, then Aston Villa manager, prevented his dream return to Liverpool due to jealousy, even after he offered to halve his wages.

Career Beginnings and Villa Move

The 44-year-old defender launched his professional career at Liverpool, making 67 first-team appearances before leaving in 2007. After a spell at Blackburn Rovers, Warnock joined Aston Villa, where Houllier, a former Liverpool boss who passed away in 2020, managed the team.

The Dispute and Transfer Bid

A falling out with Houllier led to Warnock’s demotion to the reserve squad. Gary McAllister, acting as interim manager, informed him that Kenny Dalglish wanted to bring him back to Liverpool initially on loan, with potential for a permanent deal.

Warnock stated: “Gerard Houllier was the manager of Aston Villa and I had a falling out with him. I was basically put on the reserve team squad. Then Gary McAllister came to me… to say, ‘Kenny Dalglish has been on the phone. He wants to re-sign you for Liverpool.’ It was at least on loan to start with, with a view to a permanent.”

He added: “I was like, ‘Yeah, brilliant. Get it done.’ And he was like, ‘It’s the right thing for you. Go back and enjoy your football.'”

Last-Minute Obstacles

Warnock believes Houllier blocked the move out of jealousy over his Liverpool ties. Villa suddenly demanded a £500,000 loan fee, derailing negotiations. Liverpool pulled out after the terms changed abruptly.

Warnock explained: “I think there was an element of Gerard Houllier being jealous of the fact that I could go and play for Liverpool and I could go back there and be happy. It’s a bad look. So they turned around at the last minute and put… a half-million-pound loan fee on. Liverpool were like, ‘Hang about, you’ve just changed the goalposts.'”

Despite offering to cut his salary in half, Villa refused. He recounted: “When I was supposed to be going back to Liverpool, I said to them with the loan deal, ‘Well, if we can make it work, chop my wages in half.’ I was like, ‘I’ll take less. I don’t care. Just let me go back and play.’ They were like, ‘No, no, we can’t do that.'”

The deal collapsed, leaving Warnock in reserves for the season’s remainder. Frustration peaked as he disrupted training sessions by kicking balls onto the pitch.

Later Career Path

Houllier departed Villa at the end of the 2010/11 season due to health issues. Successor Alex McLeish reinstated Warnock, who stayed another year before a Bolton loan and permanent Leeds transfer. He later played for Derby, Wigan, Burton Albion, and Bradford, retiring in 2018 to become a pundit.
