In a truly extraordinary event, Vivek Nandha, an investment banker, and Monica Nayyar, a dentist, recently celebrated their union with a multi-day wedding extravaganza in Egypt, culminating in a reception at the iconic Great Pyramids of Giza. This remarkable occasion saw the couple become one of only a handful of pairs to secure exclusive access to the entire Giza plateau for their festivities, marking a significant milestone as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World hosted their celebration.

A Journey of Celebrations: London to Giza

The wedding festivities commenced in London in June 2025 with a civil ceremony at Marylebone Town Hall. Approximately 40 close friends and family members witnessed Vivek, 32, and Monica, 31, exchange personal vows, followed by an outdoor reception at the Taj St James’ Court hotel. Further celebrations were held in Wolverhampton and Nottingham, allowing their extended families to connect.

A key element for the couple was to honor their diverse backgrounds. “We wanted our looks to reflect our British upbringing and Indian heritage whilst also blending in with Egyptian culture,” Vivek explained. Their attire and accessories were thoughtfully curated, with Vivek opting for Savile Row suits and Monica choosing designer Dolly J for all Egyptian events. Vivek’s father, a fifth-generation jeweler, handcrafted all the gemstones and jewelry for the occasion.

Egyptian Traditions and Royal Settings

The couple dedicated a year and a half to meticulously planning the three-day Egyptian celebration. The events began at the Sofitel Cairo Nile El Gezirah, on the banks of the River Nile, with a traditional Indian Haldi ceremony. Led by their family priest from London and attended by 100 guests from around the globe, this ritual involves applying turmeric paste to the bride and groom for blessings and purification.

“It was relaxed, intimate and exactly how we wanted to start the celebrations,” Vivek recalled. That same evening, the mehndi ceremony took place, a Hindu tradition where intricate henna designs are applied to Monica’s hands and feet, symbolizing health, prosperity, and love. A private dinner with live music and entertainment followed, creating a warm and festive atmosphere.

Day two of the celebrations unfolded at the Dahab Island Palace, a picturesque pink palace situated on a private Nile island. Owned by Prince Naguib, a descendant of Egypt’s former royal family and a close family friend, the venue was a perfect fit for the couple’s vision. “He’s a family friend, so the palace was somewhere we had always thought about. Once we saw it, we knew it would be perfect,” Vivek stated.

Upon arrival by boat, 180 guests were greeted by Egyptian drummers and led to the palace gardens. It was here, beneath a floral mandap adorned in soft pink hues, that Vivek and Monica exchanged their wedding vows. “The wedding dinner took place in the palace courtyard with thousands of fairy lights draped around us,” Monica shared. “We ended the night dancing in the palace gardens under the stars.”

A Night Among the Pyramids

The pinnacle of their wedding journey was the reception held amidst the awe-inspiring Great Pyramids of Giza. Achieving this required navigating stringent government regulations and site-preservation protocols to ensure the entire plateau was exclusively accessible for their event. “There was no blueprint,” Vivek noted, highlighting his close collaboration with the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

The couple made four trips to Cairo to work with planners, architects, and government officials. They designed a temporary venue using sand and clay tones to harmonize with the desert landscape, ensuring the structure felt integrated with its surroundings. “We wanted to respect the setting and make sure the colours and materials felt natural and in harmony with the desert,” Vivek explained. A significant focus was placed on bespoke lighting to illuminate the Pyramids and the Sphinx, making them integral parts of the celebration rather than mere backdrops.

For ten consecutive nights, a dedicated team worked from 5 p.m. until 5 a.m. to construct the temporary venue on the desert sand, complete with stages, kitchens, and full infrastructure. This structure was then carefully dismantled over two nights following the event.

An Unforgettable Experience

The effort culminated in a pre-dinner photo session where the couple savored the unparalleled setting. “To have the Pyramids to ourselves was so incredible. It is usually such a chaotic site, but for once it was so peaceful, and for a moment it was just the two of us taking it all in,” Vivek shared. “The silence was just so surreal. It is one of those moments that puts everything into perspective. You are standing in front of the Pyramids with the person you love.”

As the illuminated site stood silent against the night sky, Vivek recalled the profound sense of humility felt by both him and their guests, many of whom were visibly moved. Dinner, served at the foot of the Sphinx, was a culinary collaboration between chefs from India and Egypt, presenting a refined fusion of over 40 Indian, Egyptian, and British dishes. Notable selections included black truffle and Kashmiri dum aloo, wild morel and saffron shikampuri with pistachio, and fig, rose, and green cardamom Umm Ali with clotted cream.

The evening’s entertainment featured dancers, followed by a rendition of “What a Wonderful World” as biodegradable lanterns were released into the desert sky. “Against the pitch-black night, with only the glowing pyramids and Sphinx in the distance, the moment felt majestic and deeply emotional,” Vivek recounted.

A Night to Remember and Future Endeavors

The festivities continued with dancing until 4 a.m. “We danced until the early morning, and the night honestly flew by. By the time the coaches arrived to take the guests back, it felt like we had only just started,” Vivek said. In the days following the reception, guests enjoyed private tours of cultural landmarks, including the Grand Egyptian Museum.

The location held particular significance for Vivek, who had previously worked in Cairo with the United Nations. “It deepened our connection to the country and made the celebration feel even more meaningful,” he stated, noting they were the first British and Indian couple to celebrate at the pyramids. “We love travelling and experiencing new cultures, and it was one of the areas we felt very connected to. Being able to celebrate in a country with such a rich and ancient history made it feel incredibly special.”

The Couple’s Journey

Vivek, a London-based avid traveler who has visited over 130 countries, and Monica, both raised in the Midlands, met in London in 2015. Their romance blossomed in late 2019, built on shared values, ambitions, and a mutual love for travel and culture. Their bond strengthened during the Covid-19 pandemic, fostering deep conversations and understanding.

Vivek proposed in February 2024 during a trek to Everest Base Camp in Nepal. The proposal took place at Samode Palace in Jaipur, India, with fireworks illuminating the sky. Following their Egyptian wedding, the couple embarked on a three-week honeymoon in Bora Bora, where they experienced swimming with whales.

Giving Back and Future Plans

Looking ahead, the couple plans to celebrate their five-year anniversary at the Great Wall of China. Currently, their focus extends to philanthropy. “We’ve had our celebration – we want to give back as much as possible,” Vivek stated. A significant portion of the wedding expenses was allocated to the preservation of the Pyramids, reflecting their commitment to giving back to the historic site.

“We would do it all again in a heartbeat,” Vivek concluded. “It was iconic, emotional and spiritually grounding – everything we dreamed of and more.”
