Why UK TV Ignores Video Games Despite Retro Boom

Published on

Mainstream television in the UK continues to overlook video games, even as retro gaming surges in popularity on platforms like YouTube and through mini-consoles from companies such as Nintendo, Sega, and Konami.

Last Major Gaming Show Ends

Videogame Nation, the UK’s final original review-focused console gaming program, ended in summer 2016. Nearly a decade later, no similar content fills the void on traditional channels.

Gaming enthusiasts highlight television executives’ apparent disinterest, driven by misguided market research. Networks prioritize procedural dramas, true crime documentaries, hospital series, sitcoms, and reality formats over gaming, flooding schedules with shows on American cars, property flipping, or overseas dining—content with little relevance to British viewers.

Poor Treatment of Past Shows

Early efforts like GamesMaster in the 1990s set the stage, but successors improved. Bits aired from 1999 to 2001, Thumb Bandits from 2001 to 2002, and Cybernet stood out during the PlayStation era with its focus on driving games and wall-to-wall gameplay footage, narrated by Lucy Longhurst.

However, Cybernet aired after 3 a.m. in regions like Scotland, limiting viewership. Go 8 Bit on Dave channel (2016-2018) adopted a popular panel format but ended prematurely despite potential.

Shift to Online Platforms

Frustrated audiences turned to YouTube and forums years ago. Producers show little interest in gaming, evidenced by self-sabotaging decisions on the few shows produced.

Reruns of classics like GamesMaster, Bits, or Cybernet could air overnight at low cost, tapping demand already met online. Yet, executives remain detached from this audience.

Questions for Broadcasters

As advertising revenue challenges mainstream channels—outside soap opera strongholds like Coronation Street—gaming coverage offers untapped potential. The ongoing absence raises doubts about television’s adaptability in a gaming-dominated entertainment landscape.
