A recent visit to the city centre uncovers the ongoing challenges faced by local retailers. Shop owners report frequent thefts, though some note gradual improvements.
Retailers Detail Theft Experiences
Avtar Singh, owner of Virk Cut Price Store for 24 years, states, “There is too much, a lot of people are shoplifting.” He attributes most incidents to homeless individuals but observes positive changes. “Before there was more shoplifting, now people know me, there is respect,” Singh explains.
Not all experiences align perfectly. Vijay Patel of Native Exclusive Menswear reports, “I haven’t had a problem for a while,” indicating fewer recent issues for some businesses.
Police Intensify Efforts Against Retail Crime
West Midlands Police deploys four dedicated Business Crime Officers and two Police Community Support Officers to combat the rise. Conviction rates have climbed significantly from 29 percent to 53 percent.
Inspector Martin Danher affirms the force’s resolve: “Our dedication to driving down the level of shop thefts is absolute.” A new Retail Crime Operational Group convenes monthly to address persistent problems.
