World Traveler Ranks Remote South Georgia as Top Island After 400 Visits

A seasoned explorer who has visited every country on Earth and more than 400 islands worldwide declares South Georgia Island the ultimate destination, praising its raw beauty and wildlife abundance.

Extraordinary Global Journeys

Henrik Jeppesen, a 37-year-old adventurer from Thy in northwest Jutland, Denmark, has achieved the remarkable feat of traveling to all 193 United Nations-recognized nations. His adventures extend to over 2,000 locations, including islands across every ocean, from the Maldives and Seychelles to New Zealand.

Despite this extensive experience, one sub-Antarctic gem stands out: South Georgia Island, part of the British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean. Known for its Antarctic-like terrain, the island features snow-capped peaks, vast glaciers, and deep fjords. Often called the ‘Serengeti of the Southern Ocean,’ it supports over seven million penguins, up to 65,000 seals, and around 30 million nesting birds, creating landscapes reminiscent of wildlife documentaries.

Unmatched Natural Wonders

Sir David Attenborough has visited South Georgia multiple times, including a 1981 BBC expedition and a 2020 documentary. He describes it as a ‘global rarity – an ecosystem in recovery,’ highlighting the threats from climate change. Attenborough notes that glaciers have retreated by up to 500 meters since his first visit, with air temperatures rising 2.5°C over the past 70 years, making the Antarctic one of the fastest-warming regions.

Professor Dame Jane Francis, Director of the British Antarctic Survey, emphasizes its value: ‘South Georgia is a real gem in the Southern Ocean. The stunning wildlife will fill you with awe and make you wonder at the incredible beauty of the island. South Georgia shows us how much better our planet can be if we learn to live in balance with nature.’

Henrik echoes this sentiment, calling South Georgia the ‘best island in the world.’ He states: ‘This British island lies deep in the South Atlantic Ocean, in the sub-Antarctic, and feels like one of the last truly wild places on Earth. South Georgia is raw, dramatic, and overwhelming in scale – nature entirely on its own terms. It’s especially known for its enormous penguin colonies, among the largest in the world, where hundreds of thousands of birds gather on black-sand beaches beneath towering mountains and glaciers. It’s a sensory experience that’s both humbling and unforgettable.’

He adds that the island reminds travelers that ‘nature still rules the wild world,’ and the greatest destinations leave a profound, lasting impact beyond luxury or crowds.

Challenges of Reaching Paradise

Accessing South Georgia requires careful planning due to its extreme isolation. No commercial flights serve the island; visitors must join expedition cruises, typically departing from South America. Henrik shares his experience on a three-week voyage through remote seas: ‘Getting there isn’t easy. The only real way to visit is by expedition cruise. While it was unforgettable, it also reminded me of an important reality of exploration today: Even when paying a lot for an expedition cruise, landings at remote destinations are not guaranteed.’

During his trip, rough conditions prevented a scheduled stop at Tristan da Cunha, another remote island. Yet, Henrik insists South Georgia alone justifies the effort.

Other Island Highlights

Beyond South Georgia, Henrik favors New Zealand’s South Island for its epic scenery, welcoming locals, excellent cuisine, cleanliness, and high safety rankings. He explains: ‘What makes the South Island especially unforgettable to me is not just the scenery, but the people, culture, and quality of life. The locals are welcoming and friendly, the food is excellent, the country feels clean, and it’s consistently ranked among the safest places to travel in the world. This combination of breathtaking nature, warm people, and peace of mind makes the South Island a rare travel gem.’

Other favorites include Suðuroy for its tranquility and authenticity, Greenland for its cultural depth and vast scale, and Easter Island for blending isolation, history, and beauty into an unforgettable experience.
