Identical twins Martine and Louise Fokkens, recognized as the world’s oldest sex workers, recently opened up about their extraordinary careers in Amsterdam’s Red Light District. After retiring at age 70 following nearly 50 years in the industry, the sisters detailed their experiences, from bizarre client encounters to the challenges that led to their decision to step away.
Early Days in Amsterdam’s Red Light District
Growing up in a modest household in the Dutch capital, the twins were familiar with the vibrant yet controversial Red Light District from a young age. It was simply part of everyday life in their community, far from the shadowy stereotype often portrayed.
Louise entered the profession at 17, introduced to it by her husband who encouraged her to try it out. Soon after, she found herself in one of the district’s iconic window display booths, where workers advertise their services. Although she kept it secret initially, her family discovered her involvement and urged her twin, Martine, to intervene. Louise reflected on the situation, stating, “As if you can tell your twin what to do; we never listened to anyone.”
Martine joined her sister a few years later. Initially working as a cleaner in a brothel, she faced persistent offers from clients but turned them down. Financial hardship struck when her husband’s job as a builder ended during a strike, leaving the family in dire straits. With Louise already established in the field, Martine found the transition less daunting. She explained, “Without her, I would never have done it. But with her, it felt less frightening.” After guidance from fellow workers, Martine quickly took her place in a window booth.
Building a Legacy in the Industry
Over the decades, the twins amassed a combined total of around 355,000 clients. They operated their own brothel alongside a traditional Dutch restaurant, gaining fame for their signature thigh-high leather boots—for which clients paid extra to remove. The sisters embraced their roles without shame, becoming known as the “oldest window girls in Holland.”
As they aged, health issues played a role in their retirement. Louise’s arthritis made certain positions too painful, while Martine noted a decline in business. Despite these challenges, their stories highlight the resilience and camaraderie that defined their professional lives.
Bizarre Encounters and Unforgettable Clients
The twins recounted some of their most memorable and unusual experiences. One standout involved a client who fantasized about a “filthy little gnome” scenario; he reportedly shook with excitement at the mere idea of his “dirty little gnome” wife appearing.
In another incident, a client attempted to flee without paying, only to leave behind his prosthetic leg. The sisters secured the item in a cupboard until he returned to settle the bill. These tales underscore the eclectic nature of their clientele, which even included brushes with royalty.
Retirement and a Loyal Regular
Although retired for several years, Martine maintained one steadfast client—an elderly man hooked on weekly S&M sessions. She described the routine as comforting, saying, “He’s been coming to me for so long; it’s like going to church on a Sunday.” This enduring connection illustrates the deep bonds that can form in the profession.
The Fokkens’ candid revelations offer a rare glimpse into the human side of Amsterdam’s sex trade, emphasizing personal agency and the passage of time in an often-misunderstood world.
