Yard Act Unveils Limited-Edition Clothing Line with Blue Flowers

Published on

Indie band Yard Act has partnered with Manchester-based independent clothing brand Blue Flowers to release a new, limited-edition collection. The range, designed in collaboration with the Leeds-based band, features several distinct pieces, including a trench coat that holds particular significance for the group.

Yard Act’s Signature Trench Coat Reimagined

The trench coat has long been associated with Yard Act’s frontman, James Smith, who frequently sported the outerwear during the band’s early performances and promotional activities. This iconic item is central to the new collaboration, updated with unique artistic touches. The inside lining of each trench coat is adorned with paintings of the band members, created by Smith himself. This artistic endeavor extends beyond the clothing line, as Smith’s artwork was also recently featured in the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition.

The significance of the trench coat to the band’s identity was previously explored in their song, “Trench Coat Museum,” released in 2023. Smith has spoken about how the garment evolved from a simple piece of clothing into a symbol of his stage persona. He described it as a “cloak to protect me so that I could be this amplified and more obscene version of myself for performance,” allowing him to step back into his personal identity once removed. The initial trench coat used by Smith was borrowed from a bandmate, initially as a playful nod to post-punk tropes, but it soon became an integral part of his public image, boosting his confidence and enabling him to embrace a more exaggerated character for the stage.

Expanding the Collection: Denim Jackets and More

Beyond the reimagined trench coat, the Yard Act x Blue Flowers collaboration includes other apparel items. A custom denim jacket is part of the collection, offering another staple piece for fans. Additionally, an earflap hat designed in collaboration with the band is available, rounding out the initial offerings.

The launch of this clothing line follows closely on the heels of Yard Act’s recent release of their third album, titled ‘You’re Gonna Need A Little Music’. The album has received critical acclaim, with one review noting that the band has “hone[d] in on their truest form.” The review suggested that the album’s titular takeaway encourages listeners to “open up our own ears,” advocating for a more receptive approach to advice and music in a world often characterized by strong opinions.

Exclusive Bonus for Early Adopters

To celebrate the collaboration and the new album, the first 100 customers who pre-order either the trench coat or the denim jacket will receive a special bonus. This exclusive offer includes an original print of the new album artwork, personally signed by the band members. The prints are produced on heavyweight 325 GSM art card, adding a premium feel to the collectible item.

Yard Act’s Artistic and Political Engagements

The collaboration with Blue Flowers is not the first time Yard Act has engaged with artistic and cultural projects outside of their music. James Smith’s involvement in the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition highlights his broader artistic pursuits. Previously, the band hosted a notable hometown residency at the Brudenell Social Club, featuring guest appearances from artists like Nish Kumar, CMAT, and Phill Jupitus. During this residency, they performed a cover of Chumbawamba’s “Tubthumping.”

Yard Act has also been vocal about their perspectives on the contemporary political landscape. In discussions regarding the UK’s political climate, Smith has expressed strong views on electoral systems and political figures. He has articulated concerns about the division within the left-wing political spectrum and emphasized the importance of opposing certain political ideologies, which he described as a “dark, dark entity that must be struck out at all costs.”

A History of Band Collaborations

Yard Act is not the first musical act to collaborate with Blue Flowers on apparel. The independent brand has previously partnered with other artists, including Pete Doherty and Carl Barat. In 2024, the duo designed two jackets inspired by The Libertines exclusively for the menswear brand, demonstrating Blue Flowers’ established connection with the music scene.

The limited-edition Yard Act x Blue Flowers collection is now available for pre-order, offering fans a unique opportunity to own pieces that blend the band’s distinct aesthetic with the craftsmanship of the Blue Flowers brand.
