Yaya Toure Appointed Head Coach of Slovan Bratislava
Former football icon Yaya Toure, 43, is embarking on his first senior management position, having signed a three-year contract with Slovakian champions Slovan Bratislava. Toure, celebrated for his distinguished playing career at clubs like Barcelona and Manchester City, transitioned to coaching after retiring from professional football in 2019.
Prior to this managerial appointment, Toure gained coaching experience as an assistant manager for Olimpik Donetsk, Akhmat Grozny, and Standard Liege, as well as the Saudi Arabian national team. He also spent a year as an academy coach at Tottenham Hotspur before departing in 2023.
A New Era for Slovan Bratislava
Slovan Bratislava has appointed Toure as their new head coach, succeeding Vladimir Weiss, who has taken on the role of Slovakia’s national team manager. Toure reportedly impressed the club’s hierarchy during an extensive video interview process, standing out from other candidates.
The club welcomed their new manager with a video showcasing his arrival at their headquarters in Bratislava. CEO Ivan Kmotrik Jr expressed his enthusiasm for the new partnership.
“First of all, I’m very happy that Yaya Toure is our new head coach. I am glad that we have agreed on a three-year contract with him and we will begin to build a new era of Slovan Bratislava from Monday on.”
“My goal was to bring the person and personality who experienced the greatest football in the world. And at the same time, he has a huge motivation to break through as a coach.”
“The first impression was so strong that other candidates were very difficult to overcome. I immediately felt from him that we are on the same wavelength and we share a similar mindset on how to be successful.”
“Yaya has a great desire and motivation to succeed as a coach with Slovan Bratislava. We have common high goals, we are both young, ambitious and we will do our best to be successful as a club.”
“I believe we managed to build a good implementation team, that we will have a strong team and together starting Monday we will start working on a new era of the club.”
“There are new challenges ahead of us, which I look forward to together with Yaya Toure our head coach.”
Kmotrik Jr detailed his vision for the club, emphasizing his desire to bring in someone with extensive experience at the highest level of football, coupled with a strong drive to succeed as a coach. He highlighted that Toure’s initial video interview left a powerful impact, making it difficult for other candidates to compete.
Champions League Prospects
Toure’s tenure could potentially see him coaching in the Champions League. Slovan Bratislava secured the league title last season and will participate in the competition’s second qualifying round. During his playing career, Toure made 70 appearances in the Champions League, scoring eight goals and providing seven assists.
His celebrated playing days included a successful period at Barcelona, where he contributed six goals and eight assists in 118 appearances, securing two La Liga titles, a Copa del Rey, and the 2009 Champions League. He later achieved legendary status at Manchester City between 2010 and 2018, scoring 82 goals and assisting 45 in 316 appearances, leading the club to three Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and two League Cups.
