President Donald Trump has escalated tensions with Iran by announcing that ‘big powerful ships’ are moving toward the Middle East. This comes shortly after he revealed plans for a ‘massive Armada’ directed at the country, urging its leaders to negotiate a nuclear deal.
Trump’s Latest Statement on Iran
During a flight on Air Force One, Trump addressed questions about his position on Iran. He stated, ‘I certainly can’t tell you that, but we do have really big powerful ships heading in that direction, as you know… I can’t tell you, but I hope to negotiate something that’s acceptable.’
Earlier in the week, Trump described the deployment as an ‘Armada’ larger than the fleet sent to Venezuela amid efforts to remove Nicolás Maduro from power. He referenced targeted strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities from the previous summer, emphasizing that Tehran must ‘come to the table’ for talks on nuclear weapons or face consequences.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote: ‘A massive Armada is heading to Iran. It is moving quickly, with great power, enthusiasm and purpose. It is a larger fleet, headed by the great Aircraft Carrier Abraham Lincoln, than that sent to Venezuela. Like with Venezuela, it is ready, willing and able to rapidly fulfil its mission with speed and violence, if necessary. Hopefully Iran will quickly ‘Come to the Table’ and negotiate a fair and equitable deal – NO NUCLEAR WEAPONS – one that is good for all parties. Time is running out, it is truly of the essence! As I told Iran once before, MAKE A DEAL! They didn’t, and there was ‘Operation Midnight Hammer,’ a major destruction of Iran. The next attack will be far worse! Don’t make that happen again. Thank you for your attention to this matter!’
Iran’s Response from Supreme Leader
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued a direct counter-warning on Sunday. The 86-year-old leader declared that if the U.S. initiates conflict, ‘this time it will be a regional war.’
Broadcast on Iranian state television, Khamenei added: ‘We are not the instigators and we do not seek to attack any country. But the Iranian nation will deliver a firm blow to anyone who attacks or harasses it.’ These remarks mark his most explicit threat to the U.S. to date.
Broader International Context
The developments coincide with Trump’s criticism of the UK’s efforts to strengthen economic ties with China. As Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Shanghai to advocate for a ‘more sophisticated’ bilateral relationship, Trump expressed concerns.
On Friday, responding to questions about the UK’s engagement, Trump said: ‘Well, it’s very dangerous for them to do that, and it’s even more dangerous, I think, for Canada to get into business with China.’ He described Canada’s performance as ‘poorly’ and cautioned against viewing China as a solution.
