Inquest into Tragic Family Deaths Commences
A public inquiry examining the deaths of a Prince Rupert family of four is set to begin Monday following multiple delays. The proceedings will investigate the circumstances surrounding the June 2023 deaths of 35-year-old Janet Nguyen, her 38-year-old partner Christopher Duong, and their two young children Alexander (4) and Harlan (2).
Case Background and Investigation Status
The family was discovered deceased in their Silversides Drive residence during the evening hours of June 13, 2023. Authorities confirmed at the time that there were no outstanding suspects and no ongoing risk to public safety.
Procedural Delays and Rescheduling
Originally scheduled for October 2023, the inquest faced postponement due to labor disputes involving provincial employee unions. The proceedings are now confirmed to run from February 2 through February 20 at the Burnaby Coroners’ Court.
Purpose and Structure of the Inquiry
Presiding coroner Larry Marzinzik will oversee the non-fault-finding proceedings where a jury will hear sworn testimony from witnesses. Official protocols indicate such inquests are ordered when deaths involve matters of public interest or potentially preventable circumstances.
The jury’s mandate includes determining factual circumstances surrounding the deaths and formulating recommendations aimed at preventing similar tragedies. Legal experts note these proceedings typically examine systemic factors rather than assigning individual responsibility.
