Croatia’s Tactical Shift: Insider Predicts Lineup vs. England

Croatia Eyes Defensive Overhaul Ahead of England Clash

Training sessions for the Croatian national football team have reportedly focused on a back-three defensive formation as they prepare to face England. Uncovering a team’s starting lineup, often referred to as ‘leaking the team,’ is a common aspect of covering major international tournaments. In Croatia, journalists have been actively working to ascertain Zlatko Dalić’s XI for their opening Group L match against the Three Lions.

Tactical Flexibility: The Back-Three Approach

Tomislav Gabelić, a journalist with 24Sata, has offered insights into the potential strategy. “Three months ago, when World Cup preparations began, Dalić openly stated his consideration of switching to a back-three for the England game,” Gabelić explained. “He has experimented with this in previous matches, experiencing varying degrees of success. However, my prediction is that he will opt for a three-player backline.”

Gabelić elaborated on the potential formations, suggesting a 3-4-2-1 or 3-5-2 setup, emphasizing a defensive structure with opportunities for counter-attacks. “The current focus is on understanding the formation,” he stated. “When playing with three central defenders, the selection of two wingers capable of defending is crucial, likely pointing to Josip Stanišić and Ivan Perišić. If these positions are filled, alongside Josko Gvardiol, Josip Šutalo, and young Luka Vušković in defense, the midfield control will depend on players like Luka Modrić, Mateo Kovačić, Martin Baturina, or Petar Šučić. Upfront, a choice between strikers such as Petar Musa, who plays for FC Dallas, or Ante Budimir is anticipated.”

The Team News Debate: A Global Phenomenon

The early release of lineup information is often met with criticism, particularly concerning the England team, with concerns that opponents might gain a tactical advantage. However, Gabelić asserts that this is not an issue exclusive to England.

“The reaction is similar here in Croatia when our national team’s lineup is discussed,” Gabelić noted. “Coach Zlatko Dalić himself has expressed disappointment at times when team details emerge before he officially announces them. It is our professional responsibility to engage with sources and obtain accurate team information. I don’t view it as a major story, as the coach will release the official team 90 minutes before the game, at which point the opponent will have all the details.”

The Role of Journalists in Uncovering Information

Gabelić highlighted the inherent nature of journalistic work in gathering such information. “Through years of experience, we develop an understanding of the game and player form, enabling us to do this job effectively,” he said. “We interact with parents, siblings, partners, managers, and friends, which facilitates information gathering. The distinction between coaches and journalists, as I see it, is that we can often sense when something is developing or amiss, while the coach possesses the ability to rectify it.”
