Major Toy Retailer Seeks Financial Restructuring

Toys ‘R’ Us Canada has initiated creditor protection proceedings as part of efforts to restructure its business operations. Court documents reveal the retailer cited multiple financial pressures including rising inflation, increased labor expenses, supply chain disruptions, and changing consumer preferences toward online shopping as primary reasons for the filing.

Mounting Financial Pressures

The company stated it implemented several cost-cutting measures in recent months, including workforce reductions and closure of underperforming locations. Officials confirmed negotiations with suppliers were attempted to alleviate financial strain, but these efforts proved insufficient to stabilize operations.

Significant Outstanding Debts

Financial records indicate the retailer currently owes vendors at least $120 million, with additional substantial liabilities to commercial landlords. While all 22 existing Canadian stores continue normal operations, company representatives acknowledged the possibility of further location reductions.

Operational Changes Since Ownership Transition

The current store count represents a significant reduction from the 81 locations operational when Putman Investments acquired the business from Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. in 2021. The Ancaster, Ontario-based investment firm has overseen the retailer’s operations through recent economic challenges.
