A 32-year-old father has admitted to manslaughter after violently shaking his six-week-old son to death when the infant would not settle.
Peter Sayle entered the guilty plea on the fifth day of his trial at Preston Crown Court. Prosecutors accepted it in place of the original murder charge.
Tragic Incident Unfolds
Little Huxley stopped breathing at the family home in Squires Wood, Fulwood. Paramedics rushed him to Royal Preston Hospital, where scans revealed a severe head injury. Doctors transferred him to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital in the early hours of June 14, 2022.
Despite intensive care, Huxley’s injuries proved fatal. Medical staff withdrew life support on July 14, 2022.
Investigation and Arrests
Authorities arrested Sayle three days later, on June 17, 2022, at his Fulwood home on suspicion of Section 18 wounding. During questioning, he denied responsibility, insisting any injuries occurred while performing CPR.
CT scans reviewed on June 22, 2022, confirmed multiple skull fractures and brain injuries consistent with violent shaking. Experts noted these would cause immediate symptoms.
Sayle faced a second arrest on suspicion of murder but continued to deny involvement. A Home Office post-mortem examination determined the cause of death as traumatic head injury, ruling out natural causes.
Dr. Alison Armour reported that Huxley also suffered two rib fractures, incompatible with CPR and likely from forceful gripping or squeezing around the chest during shaking.
In his final police interview on March 27, 2025, Sayle denied shaking the baby and claimed no role in the collapse.
Revealing Evidence
Analysis of Sayle’s mobile phone uncovered troubling searches shortly after Huxley’s birth, including “tips to deal with frustration and anger,” “baby crying makes me angry dad,” and “I’m getting so angry when baby won’t sleep.”
Now of no fixed address, Sayle awaits sentencing on Thursday, February 12, at Preston Crown Court.
Police Response
DCI Andy Fallows, from Lancashire Police’s Force Major Investigation Team, stated: “I welcome today’s manslaughter plea put forward by Peter Sayle. After three and a half years of denials he has finally admitted that he is responsible for assaulting and causing baby Huxley’s death.”
“While this has been a particularly sensitive and challenging case, my investigation team’s relentless focus has always been on achieving justice for baby Huxley. Today we have managed to achieve that.”
