Four individuals—Simon Kadwill, Chantelle McDougall, her five-year-old daughter Leela, and friend Tony Popic—vanished in 2007. They left a note claiming a move to Brazil, but passports remained unused, bank accounts untouched, and no contact followed. Whispers of a doomsday cult, hidden identities, and isolation fuel speculation: voluntary escape, murder, or suicide?

The Disappearance Shocks Nannup

The group resided in a blue farmhouse on the town’s outskirts. Neighbors knew Chantelle and Tony as friendly locals, but Kadwill rarely emerged, often sleeping days and posting online at night. His forum, The Gateway, drew ‘servers’ to teachings blending spiritual ascension with warnings of ‘dark negative forces.’ He positioned himself as a cosmic messenger guiding humanity through a ‘great transition’ after a 75,000-year cycle.

Chantelle’s Journey into Kadwill’s World

Chantelle McDougall, once a vibrant, theatrical teen full of life, graduated high school in 1997 and moved to Melbourne. There, at 17, she met Simon Cookerman, who introduced her to Kadwill’s book Servers of the Divine Plan. She soon met Kadwill, became a live-in nanny for his son, and immersed herself in his secluded life with partner Deborah Fleischer.

Her parents, Cath and Jim McDougall, noticed drastic changes. ‘It was a bit of a shock… she was just a different person,’ Jim recalls. Chantelle grew secretive, abandoning acting dreams. Despite concerns, Cath walked on eggshells to maintain contact.

Chantelle traveled Australia and the UK but stayed linked to Kadwill, even aiding his return to Australia amid identity questions. By 2000, they lived together with Fleischer and Justine Smith. Chantelle gave birth to Leela in 2001. Cath met Kadwill then, unsettled by his odd questions but silent to preserve family ties.

Isolation Deepens in Nannup

The group relocated frequently, settling in Nannup in 2003 with Tony Popic, a nomadic follower living in a backyard tent. Kadwill restricted visits. ‘He basically said… “you talk rough and you’ll corrupt her,”‘ Jim shares of Leela interactions. He blocked photos, claiming they stole souls, and halted goodbyes.

Locals saw Kadwill’s control. Homeschooler Dianne Abbott described Chantelle as ‘smiley’ and Leela a ‘pocket rocket of energy.’ Kadwill told her Chantelle suffered ‘end-time syndrome,’ excusing isolation. Pub colleagues noted Chantelle’s nervousness with Kadwill waiting outside. Friend Kay Savory ended contact after Kadwill interrogated her over a business idea.

Ominous Events Precede Vanishing
