An explosion at a nightclub in Peru’s Trujillo province has injured 33 people, including several teenagers, following a blast early Saturday morning.

The incident occurred in the pre-dawn hours at the Dali nightclub in the northern La Libertad region. Local authorities from the Emergency Operations Centre confirmed the details, noting five victims remain in serious condition.

Severe Injuries Reported

Gerardo Florián Gómez, executive director of the Trujillo Health Network, stated that at least five injured individuals are in critical condition. Several victims sustained amputations and shrapnel wounds, with many undergoing emergency surgery.

Among the casualties are three minors: one 16-year-old and two 17-year-olds.

Witness Describes Chaos

Fiorella Mantilla, present at the nightclub during the explosion, recounted glass shards embedding in her legs. She described the blast as sounding like the venue’s sound system suddenly shutting off.

Wave of Violence in Region

The attack follows a similar explosion less than a month earlier in Trujillo, which damaged 25 homes but caused no injuries or deaths.

La Libertad, home to Peru’s largest gold-producing Andean area, faces ongoing threats from extortion rackets and illegal mining. Official data shows 286 explosions in the region during 2025, including 136 in Trujillo city.

Recent incidents include a January 2025 detonation at a prosecutor’s office and August-September blasts that damaged homes and injured over 20 people. Authorities link these events to organized crime groups like Los Pulpos, which have expanded operations to Chile and neighboring countries.
