Double Vision Warns of Deadly Meningitis Outbreak Killing Two in Kent

Meningitis Outbreak Claims Two Lives in Kent

Health officials issue urgent warnings following a meningitis outbreak in Kent that has resulted in two fatalities. The infection primarily strikes young children, students, and young adults, targeting the protective layers around the brain and spinal cord. It can trigger severe sepsis and lead to lasting brain or nerve damage.

Bacterial meningitis, though less common than the viral form, poses a greater threat. The illness spreads via sneezing, coughing, or close contact like kissing, with symptoms appearing rapidly.

Key Symptoms Including Overlooked Double Vision

Health authorities highlight common signs such as high fever, vomiting, severe headache, a non-fading rash (tested by rolling a glass over it), neck stiffness, sensitivity to light, drowsiness, unresponsiveness, and seizures. A critical yet often missed symptom is diplopia, or double vision, stemming from inflammation of cranial nerves controlling eye movement.

The UK’s leading meningitis charity, Meningitis Now, recounts the experience of a woman who developed viral meningitis. She described needing to keep her eyes closed most of the time to rest them, as the virus damaged her optic nerve. Her vision eventually recovered.

Outbreak Hits Schools and University

Two students have died from the outbreak. A Year 13 pupil at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Faversham passed away on Saturday. The University of Kent reported a student’s death on Sunday, with 11 others falling ill from an invasive strain in Canterbury.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has notified over 30,000 students, staff, and families. Amelia McIlroy, headteacher at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, stated: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm that on Saturday, one of our much loved students in Year 13, died of meningitis. We are all absolutely devastated. Our love and thoughts are with their family and friends. Our priority now is the safety, well-being and support of all members of our school community at this terribly sad time. We will be working with UKHSA to ensure that all appropriate actions are taken to protect our students and staff.”

Trish Mannes, UKHSA regional deputy director for the South East, noted that symptoms might be mistaken for a cold, flu, or hangover. She added that close contacts of cases have received antibiotics preventively.

At the University of Kent, Vice-Chancellor Georgina Randsley de Moura announced no in-person assessments this week, though the campus stays open. She said: “Events like this affect people in different ways, and I recognise that many of us will feel shocked, distressed or in need of support.”

Prevention and Treatment Options

Vaccines like MenB, 6-in-1, Pneumococcal, MMRV, and MenACWY provide protection. Prompt treatment is vital, as delays can prove fatal.
