Starmer Approves US Strikes from UK Bases in Hormuz Crisis

Published on

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has authorized the United States to launch attack missions from British airbases targeting Iranian positions blocking the Strait of Hormuz. This decision marks a significant escalation in UK involvement hours after President Donald Trump criticized NATO allies as ‘cowards’ for failing to secure the vital shipping route.

Details of the UK Authorization

Downing Street confirms that RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire and Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean now support US operations to reopen the strait. Previously, these bases permitted only defensive strikes against Iranian missile sites threatening British lives or interests. The Ministry of Defence adds that RAF aircraft conduct defensive air patrols over Jordan, Qatar, the UAE, and Bahrain to safeguard regional allies.

A No 10 spokesman explains that Iran’s strikes on Red Ensign vessels and those of Gulf partners risk broader regional crisis and economic fallout, including higher global oil prices felt in the UK.

Political Backlash in Westminster

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch labels the move the ‘mother of all U-turns.’ Shadow Defence Secretary James Cartlidge criticizes weeks of indecision, stating, ‘After weeks of dither and finger-pointing, the Prime Minister has again changed his mind and performed another screeching U-turn.’

MPs across parties warn of deeper UK entanglement without parliamentary debate. Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn calls it ‘a reckless act of escalation that endangers us all. No discussion. No debate. What a disgrace. How on earth can the Prime Minister still pretend we are not involved?’ Veteran Labour MP Jon Trickett notes the contradiction with de-escalation goals, while Plaid Cymru’s Liz Saville Roberts demands a parliamentary vote.

Trump’s Sharp Rebuke of NATO

In a Truth Social post, Trump describes NATO as a ‘paper tiger’ without US support, vowing to ‘REMEMBER’ allies’ refusal to join the fight. He writes, ‘Now that fight is Militarily WON, with very little danger for them, they complain about the high oil prices they are forced to pay but don’t want to help open the Strait of Hormuz… COWARDS, and we will REMEMBER!’

Outside the White House, Trump expresses surprise at the UK’s delay, saying, ‘I was a little surprised at the UK to be honest – they should have acted a lot faster… They were really pretty much our first ally… they didn’t want us to use the island (Diego Garcia).’

Escalating Regional Tensions

US intelligence assesses Iran could block the strait for up to six months. The bases now enable defensive operations to neutralize missile threats to shipping. NATO has withdrawn its advisory mission from Iraq, removing all personnel from the Middle East.

Around 2,500 US Marines prepare to deploy to the region, with two more units to follow. Reports suggest consideration of seizing Kharg Island, a key oil export hub off Iran’s coast, to compel negotiations. A US source indicates, ‘We need about a month to weaken the Iranians more with strikes, take the island and then get them by the balls and use it for negotiations.’

Such action risks Iranian retaliation against Gulf energy infrastructure, soaring oil prices, and tensions with China, which imports 13 percent of its oil from Iran. Tehran vows continued resistance, with the IRGC stating, ‘The soldiers of Islam are eagerly awaiting the American marines… fully prepared to deliver a hard slap.’ IRGC spokesman General Ali Mohammad Naeini declared the war would persist until enemies exhaust, but he was reportedly killed in a subsequent strike.

Saudi Arabia signals potential retaliation if Iran targets critical infrastructure further. Iranian drones struck a Kuwaiti oil refinery despite calls to spare energy sites. Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu insists a ‘ground component’ is essential to topple the regime, as air operations alone prove insufficient. UK military planners collaborate with US Central Command on tanker escort options, though defence sources highlight risks deterring warship deployments.
