Repurpose Empty Tin Cans as Rustic Herb Planters for Gardens

Published on

As spring arrives, many households revive their outdoor spaces by planting flowers, herbs, and vegetables. Gardening expert Simon Akeroy recommends repurposing empty tin cans instead of recycling them immediately, turning them into charming herb planters that add rustic appeal to patios and gardens.

Simple Steps to Create Tin Can Herb Planters

Simon demonstrates an easy DIY project using cans from beans, soups, or lentils. Begin by thoroughly washing the tins and removing labels for a clean appearance. This prevents residue from affecting plant growth.

Essential Drainage and Hanging Features

Pierce several drainage holes in the bottom of each tin using a drill to ensure healthy root development. For hanging options, add a small hole on the side near the back.

To create a handle, repurpose an old wire coat hanger. Simon instructs: “Bend the hanger to form hooks that can fit into the side hole you made.” Thread it through and secure, allowing the planter to hang from a nail or trellis.

Planting and Care Tips

Fill the tins with peat-free compost to support eco-friendly growth without chemicals. Simon selects mint, parsley, and thyme, noting: “They thrive in containers and will create a lovely, fragrant display.”

Once planted and hung, these planters enhance any garden space while promoting sustainable practices.

Positive Feedback from Gardeners

Simon’s social media followers praise the idea. One comments, “Great idea.” Another adds, “Brilliant Simon.” A third notes, “They look cute.”
