Led Zeppelin icon Robert Plant surprised visitors while browsing crates at Spillers Records, recognized as the world’s oldest record store in Cardiff’s Morgan Arcade. The band’s strong ties to Wales date back decades.

Record Store Day Recognition

Ahead of Record Store Day on April 18, 2026, the 77-year-old singer earns the title of “record store legend.” He chose Spillers for his commemorative plaque, dubbing himself the event’s “director of organizations and prosecutions” and calling the shop an enduring institution.

Plant’s Personal Connection

Plant shared fond memories: “Quite a lot of my friends were based either around Rockfield Studios, up in Monmouth, or in this area. So there was always a meeting point. Why not pop in here? And then perhaps a pint of Brains, I don’t know.”

He recalled the enthusiasm of store staff: “The people who were looking after the stores were as keen as we were to dig in, get the groove of it all. And I never, very, very seldom, did I ever have any money to buy anything, but I listened to a lot of music, thanks to the people in the store.”

Describing the venue as “hallowed territory,” Plant added: “It belonged to us as a youth culture then. It had its own language, it was a place to hang out. Meet girls!”

Store Owner’s Tribute

Spillers owner Ashli Todd praised Plant’s passion: “Record shops of the world will know first-hand that above all, Robert Plant is a connoisseur of his craft whose appetite for musical discoveries has not waned with the passage of time.” She views hosting the plaque as a great honor.
