Iran has called on Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan to pay reparations for facilitating U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on its territory.
Official Demand to UN
Iranian envoy Amir Saeid Iravani addressed a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday. He accused the five Arab nations of permitting U.S. forces to launch attacks from bases on their soil. Iravani fuher claimed that some states paicipated directly in unlawful strikes targeting civilian sites.
“These states should make full reparation to the Islamic Republic of Iran, including compensation for all material and moral damage sustained as a result of their internationally wrongful acts,” Iravani stated.
Rejection of Counterclaims
Iravani dismissed prior demands from the Gulf states holding Iran responsible for war damage, calling them “legally untenable and fundamentally divorced from the factual and legal realities.”
Background on the Airstrikes
On February 28, the U.S. and Israel conducted strikes aimed at dismantling Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs. The attacks resulted in the deaths of dozens of senior officials, including longtime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and more than 1,300 civilians.
Targets extended beyond military facilities to include energy infrastructure, bridges, universities, and schools.
Iran’s Response
Iran retaliated by targeting U.S. bases in the region and civilian infrastructure in the Gulf states, such as oil and gas facilities, airpos, and seapos. Tehran described these actions as a legitimate exercise of self-defense.
