Fort Matilda Bowling Club marks the start of its 2026 playing season with a lively opening day filled with bowling action and community gatherings. Members and invited guests gathered on the green to kick off the program.
Helen McKenzie, sister-in-law of club president Elinor Dunn, rolled the first bowl to officially launch the event.
Strong Turnout and Positive Vibes
Club secretary Neil Harris hailed the day as a resounding success. “We had a fabulous turnout and had more than 60 people with us on the day. The clubhouse was full,” Harris stated. “We managed to get out and play a few ends of bowls which everyone really enjoyed, despite it being a bit chilly.”
The club welcomed visitors from other Inverclyde clubs and introduced around half a dozen new members. Everyone anticipates a packed season ahead.
Exciting Plans and Competitions
Plans are underway for a unique inter-club competition in June featuring local rugby, tennis, and bowling teams. Centenary Cup winners Jean Chalmers and Paul Campbell will compete for the club in the Bowls Scotland mixed pairs event.
The club is negotiating with Sport Scotland for an expansion of the ladies’ locker room and exploring partnerships with new sponsors.
Community Invitation: Try Bowls Event
On May 8, the club hosts a try bowls event for newcomers. “We’re encouraging people in the neighbourhood to come along and give it a go,” Harris noted.
Last year’s centenary celebrations energized the members and paved the way for continued growth. “We’re looking forward to a really busy year. We’re a very friendly, community orientated club and we’re moving in a very positive direction,” Harris added. “We want to encourage people in the neighbourhood to come along and give bowls a go.”
