Manchester United Defensive Shortage Before Chelsea Clash
Manchester United confronts a centre-back shortage ahead of Saturday’s match against Chelsea after the FA extended Harry Maguire’s suspension by one additional game following his red card against Bournemouth.
Maguire sat out Monday’s loss to Leeds United due to the standard one-match ban from tugging Evanilson’s shirt during the 2-2 draw away at Bournemouth on March 20. The 33-year-old now faces further absence after regulators deemed him guilty of using abusive or insulting words toward fourth official Matt Donohue while protesting the dismissal, which resulted in a late penalty for Bournemouth. He had earlier contested the call with referee Stuart Attwell.
Martínez Also Suspended, Appeal Underway
This leaves Maguire joining Lisandro Martínez on the sidelines for the Stamford Bridge encounter. The 28-year-old Argentine received a red card against Leeds for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair, though United is challenging the ruling, which carries an automatic three-match ban under FA violent conduct guidelines.
Over the past three seasons, United has played 32 matches across all competitions without both Maguire and Martínez, securing victory in just 12.
Timing of Decision Sparks Surprise
The FA’s 26-day deliberation on Maguire’s case caught some at United off guard, with the verdict arriving only three days before the pivotal Chelsea fixture—a key battle for a top-five position and Champions League spot next season.
Carrick’s Limited Options in Defense
Head coach Michael Carrick likely turns to 19-year-old Ayden Heaven and 20-year-old Leny Yoro at centre-back against sixth-placed Chelsea, who trail third-placed United by seven points. Veteran Matthijs de Ligt remains sidelined by a prolonged back injury.
Heaven, acquired from Arsenal 14 months ago, has logged just 15 minutes across four substitute outings under Carrick. Yoro has faced form inconsistencies this season. More seasoned options like 30-year-old Luke Shaw and 28-year-old Noussair Mazraoui can shift centrally but favor full-back roles.
Inconsistency in Refereeing Decisions
United contests Martínez’s sending-off, noting referee Paul Tierney overlooked a similar hair-pulling incident by Fulham’s Kenny Tete on Antoine Semenyo during Manchester City’s 3-0 victory over Marco Silva’s team two months prior.
“That decision was one of the worst I’ve ever seen,” Carrick remarked on Martínez’s dismissal. “He [Calvert-Lewin] can throw his arms in Licha’s [Martínez’s] face — and then he’s sent off. Shocking. I don’t even know what it looks like. It’s not a pull, it’s not a tug, it’s not aggressive. He touches it and he gets sent off. Worse of all, he gets sent to overturn it, a clear and obvious error. Shocking. He is off balance and grappling. We have got to be careful where the game is going. It is a shocking decision, absolutely shocking.”
