Deadliest Catch to Honor Todd Meadows After Fatal Bering Sea Fall

Published on

Discovery Channel confirms that the upcoming 22nd season of Deadliest Catch, premiering May 8, will feature a special tribute to 25-year-old rookie deckhand Todd Meadows, who tragically died after falling overboard in the Bering Sea.

The Fatal Incident

On February 25, Meadows fell from Captain Rick Shelford’s Aleutian Lady crab vessel off Alaska’s coast. Crew members launched a desperate rescue amid calm seas and good visibility, but his rescue harness snapped during the effort.

Deckhand Trey John Green III, 30, described spotting Meadows swimming initially, his eyes visible from afar. Rescue swimmer Steve Porter entered the frigid water, but the harness failed on the first attempt. A life sling was deployed next, hoisting Meadows halfway up before he fell back lifeless.

Meadows remained in the water for three to four minutes before retrieval. Crew performed CPR for 45 minutes and used an AED device, but Captain Shelford eventually halted efforts. Meadows showed signs of turning blue with foam from his mouth and nose. His death certificate lists drowning with probable hypothermia as the cause, pronounced at 5:15 p.m. that day.

Green noted the water temperature hovered just above freezing, with air below zero. No crew members wore lifejackets, a common practice on long shifts despite the risks. The incident followed a mishap with a shellfish pot, and cameras captured it from multiple angles for the show’s filming.

Network’s Handling of the Tragedy

Although cameras recorded the event, Discovery Channel will not air the footage out of respect for Meadows’ wife and three young children. A homage appears in the season premiere, with his pre-incident scenes featured in later episodes. The season also explores the loss’s impact on crewmates and the fishing community.

Family’s Response and Prior Injury

Meadows’ mother, Angela, expressed the family’s desire to avoid any accident footage. “We don’t want to see any footage from the accident and do not want Discovery to air any of that footage or make money off of our son’s death,” she stated. “We hope they only air good things of Todd on that boat.”

Weeks earlier, Meadows suffered a concussion from a head injury on the vessel, leading to medical leave and recovery in Washington. The family holds no blame toward the show for that incident.

Green reflected, “We got him on the boat as fast as we possibly could; it just wasn’t enough.” Meadows’ body was preserved in a freezer, transported to Anchorage, and cremated. A Coast Guard investigation continues, with the family seeking justice.

Community Support

A GoFundMe for Meadows’ sons has raised over $48,000, reflecting widespread support for the young fisherman’s legacy.
