David Charvet, the 53-year-old Baywatch alum, faces no charges after accidentally striking and killing his neighbor’s dog with his truck in a Malibu gated community on April 16, 2026.
Details of the Incident
The collision occurred around 5:30 a.m. under low-light conditions. Charvet drove through the neighborhood when he encountered a neighbor walking three dogs in the middle of the street without leashes. He slowed his vehicle, moved to the side to pass safely, but one dog darted under the truck.
Charvet immediately stopped, called 911, remained at the scene, and fully cooperated with investigators. The 11-year-old English Labrador, named Sunday, owned by neighbor Vera Errico, received veterinary care but was euthanized due to its injuries.
Errico maintains that her dogs were leashed at the time. However, photo and video evidence reportedly shows the dogs off-leash, including footage hours later of Errico walking two other dogs unleashed on the street.
Official Investigation Outcome
The Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Department investigated the matter and determined it was an accident with no criminal wrongdoing. A department statement notes: “It sounds like it was accidental and that the dogs were off leash and ran into the roadway,” adding that Charvet “tried to swerve to avoid hitting them.”
Deputies responded at approximately 6:00 a.m. to a traffic-related incident involving a vehicle striking a dog. The owner transported the animal for treatment, but it later succumbed to injuries. A traffic report is being prepared.
Charvet’s Response and Awareness Efforts
A representative for Charvet emphasizes that he is an animal lover and responsible dog owner who would never intentionally harm an animal. The rep states Charvet’s thoughts are with the family who lost their dog.
Since the incident, Charvet has endured online harassment and death threats. His team plans to counter false claims, protect his reputation, and raise awareness about pet safety and preventing animal cruelty. Evidence allegedly shows the dog’s owner violated leash laws.
