Sydney Road Rage: Driver Hits Teen on E-Bike After Heated Clash

Published on

In a shocking road rage incident in Sydney’s affluent North Curl Curl suburb, a driver allegedly struck a 15-year-old boy on an e-bike, leaving him with serious leg injuries. Brave bystanders tried to prevent the man from fleeing by attempting to pull him from his white Volkswagen.

The Altercation Unfolds

The incident occurred on Monday, April 27, when the driver made a rude hand gesture at a group of teenagers riding e-bikes. The teens followed the car, leading to a verbal argument between the driver and one 15-year-old boy.

During the confrontation, the driver threw a water bottle at the teen. The boy threw it back but missed. The 15-year-old then blocked the car at an intersection, at which point the driver allegedly accelerated, hitting the boy and throwing him from the e-bike before fleeing the scene.

Swift Police Response and Arrest

Officers responded to reports of the crash, captured partly on camera. A New South Wales Police spokesperson stated: “The group of teenagers – all riding e-bikes – followed the car before one of the teens – a 15-year-old boy – engaged in a verbal argument with the driver.”

The driver was arrested just an hour later in nearby Dee Why. Paramedics stabilized the boy at the scene and transported him to Randwick Children’s Hospital. He avoided an airlift despite severe leg injuries.

Witness Describes the Horror

A local woman named Laura recounted the chaos: “We were just driving down around the corner onto Abbott Road and saw a car fully up on the curb. We stopped because we were like, someone has been hit.”

She added: “The passenger door of the car kind of opened and then slammed shut, and the driver of that car swerved out, nearly hit us, and then swerved off.” Laura confirmed the water bottle exchange escalated the situation: “They said that the guy from the car had thrown a bottle out of the car at the kids on the e-bikes. Then they threw it back at the car and then that is when he just accelerated up off the road, like completely off the road, and hit the kid.”

She noted the boy’s legs were badly damaged and bleeding, with the e-bike severely wrecked. “E-bikes are sometimes annoying, but you would not run someone over. That could have gone so much worse,” she said. “I do not know what is going on with the world.”

Charges Filed

The driver faces charges of driving furiously in a motor vehicle and causing bodily harm, negligent driving, and driving while his license application was refused. He received bail and is due in Manly Local Court on May 20.
