Schmeichel Urges Man Utd to Sign Sunderland Star Granit Xhaka

Manchester United should target Granit Xhaka from Sunderland this summer to strengthen their midfield with proven leadership, according to club legend Peter Schmeichel.

Xhaka’s Stellar Season at Sunderland

The 33-year-old Swiss midfielder has excelled since his £17 million transfer from Bayer Leverkusen in August. Xhaka quickly assumed the captain’s armband and featured in 31 Premier League matches, delivering six assists and anchoring the Black Cats’ impressive campaign.

Schmeichel’s Bold Recommendation

With Casemiro set to depart after four years at Old Trafford, Schmeichel views the former Arsenal captain as an ideal, cost-effective replacement. “Maybe controversial in thinking, but I think we should go and sign Xhaka, cheaper,” Schmeichel stated.

He emphasized building around young talent like Kobbie Mainoo while adding experienced players such as Adam Wharton or Elliot Anderson. “What we don’t have really is proper leadership,” Schmeichel added. “When I look and see what Xhaka has done at Sunderland, he is the reason why they are absolutely amazing.”

Schmeichel praised Xhaka’s ability to play 80 percent of games, his technical quality, and his commanding presence. “His leadership qualities are great… I think Xhaka would bring a lot to the dressing room, and have power around the person which is rare.”

Addressing United’s Leadership Gap

Schmeichel acknowledged leaders like Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes but noted the squad lacks depth in that area. “We’ve been in squads where everyone was leading. You need somebody who can pull you out by the hair… and get you playing,” he explained, highlighting the value in tough midweek fixtures.

He questioned Sandro Tonali’s credentials at Newcastle, positioning Xhaka as a superior short-term option for one or two seasons.

Transfer Feasibility

Xhaka has two years remaining on his Sunderland contract, enhancing his value after his transformative impact. Manchester United’s Champions League qualification provides financial flexibility, potentially making the move viable despite competition.

Sunderland, under Regis Le Bris, sit four points from seventh-placed Brentford and five from sixth-placed Bournemouth with three games left. A top-six finish could secure European football if Aston Villa wins the Europa League, giving Xhaka incentive to stay.
