TV Presenter Credits Non-Exercise Activity for Maintaining Physique
In a world where celebrity fitness routines often involve intense workouts and rigorous regimes, television presenter Christine Lampard has revealed a surprisingly simple secret to her svelte physique. The 47-year-old asserts that her key to staying in shape is not dedicated gym sessions, but rather a lifestyle focused on consistent, everyday movement.
The Power of ‘NEAT’
Lampard, a mother of two, swears by what is known as Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, or NEAT. This concept refers to the energy expended through activities that are not considered formal exercise. Essentially, it encompasses all the movement we do throughout the day that keeps us on our feet.
Speaking to Woman and Home magazine, Lampard explained her philosophy: “I don’t go to the gym but I’m always moving and I think that keeps me fit.” She contrasts her approach with that of her husband, Frank, who is more inclined towards traditional gym workouts. “Frank is very good with gym stuff but I find that general activeness and not sitting around for too long is pretty good for me,” she stated.
A Day of Active Living
Lampard’s daily routine is a testament to NEAT principles. Waking at 5:45 am, she is busy preparing breakfast and lunch for her children before walking them to school. This is often followed by walking the family dogs. Her day continues with active household chores, contributing significantly to her daily step count without the need for structured exercise.
In a previous social media post, she admitted to being “very lazy when it comes to exercise,” but emphasized her commitment to walking. “I walk and I walk,” she declared, highlighting its importance for her fitness.
Walking: The Perfect Exercise?
While Lampard has expressed an interest in trying Pilates, she admits she hasn’t yet found the time. For now, she finds walking to be an “absolute perfect exercise.” She elaborated, “it gets the heart pumping, keeps everything together, keeps you just generally fit.” She advocates for consistency in moderate activity over infrequent, high-intensity workouts.
Dietary Habits Complement Activity
Complementing her active lifestyle, Lampard also maintains a disciplined approach to her diet. She follows a motto of “eating like a king, then a prince, then a pauper, as the day goes on,” prioritizing a substantial breakfast. Her morning meal often includes tomatoes on toast with grilled bacon and two poached eggs.
For lunch, she typically opts for a jacket potato with cheese. Dinners are varied, with options like homemade chicken and mushroom pie or a Sunday roast. Snacks consist of fibre-rich choices like hummus and carrot sticks.
When discussing her diet, Lampard mentioned her strategy for regaining balance after periods of indulgence, such as holidays. “If I have been away eating and drinking for a while, like at Christmas, I just try and eat healthy when I am back to get back in shape,” she explained. She avoids strict elimination, instead focusing on healthier substitutions, like swapping a regular potato for a sweet potato, and limiting carbohydrate intake later in the evening to avoid bloating.
