Bridge Opening Uncertain as Prime Minister Addresses Delays

Prime Minister Mark Carney has indicated that the highly anticipated opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, connecting Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, may not occur as scheduled this week. Despite a ribbon-cutting ceremony planned for Friday, officials are managing expectations about the immediate availability of the vital infrastructure project.

“Everyone’s working hard to make sure the bridge is open as soon as possible,” Prime Minister Carney stated on Wednesday. He added, “There’s no big drama if it takes a little longer, it’ll take a little longer.” These remarks follow his confirmation on Tuesday that the bridge, a $6.4 billion project financed by the Canadian federal government, was slated for an official opening this week. Carney has previously described the bridge as a significant symbol of cooperation between Canada and the United States.

Past Diplomatic Hurdles and Toll Structures

Earlier this year, U.S. President Donald Trump had expressed opposition to the bridge’s opening, citing a lack of compensation as the reason. At that time, Prime Minister Carney reported that President Trump had tasked U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra with playing a role in facilitating discussions surrounding the bridge. Under the current financial arrangement, Canada is set to collect all toll revenue until the project’s financing costs are recouped. Following this period, profits will be shared equally with the state of Michigan.

When approached for comment on Wednesday regarding the bridge’s opening status, a spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy declined to provide details. Earlier, Ontario Premier Doug Ford had voiced skepticism about the planned opening date, with the White House confirming that President Trump’s stance on the bridge had not shifted. “Let’s see if it opens or not,” Premier Ford told reporters in Washington, D.C. “Hopefully it will, if they say it’s going to open. I’m just hearing two stories.”

Details on Tolls and Competition

Construction on the Gordie Howe International Bridge commenced in 2018, aiming to alleviate congestion at the existing Ambassador Bridge, which currently handles over a quarter of all trade between Canada and the U.S. In March, the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority announced the toll rates for the new crossing. Passenger vehicles will face a toll of $8 CAD/$5.75 USD per trip, while commercial trucks, oversized vehicles, and larger passenger vehicles will be charged $12 CAD/$8.75 USD per axle. The authority also introduced a discount program, “Breakaway,” which reduces the per-axle cost for commercial vehicles to $9.60 CAD/$6.90 USD and the per-crossing cost for passenger vehicles to $6 CAD/$4.35 USD.

For comparison, current toll rates at the Ambassador Bridge, which is approaching its 100th year of operation, are $10.00 USD/$14.00 CAD per crossing for passenger vehicles and $15.00-20.00 USD per axle for commercial vehicles. The owner of the Ambassador Bridge, Matthew Maroun, has vocally opposed the construction of the new competing crossing. His company, the Detroit International Bridge Company Inc., has been actively engaged in lobbying efforts with the U.S. government on this matter.
