Ombudsman Delivers Decisive Performance at Royal Ascot

The Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot on Wednesday saw a breathtaking display of dominance from Ombudsman, leaving no room for doubt regarding the outcome. The colt’s powerful charge down the outside secured a commanding victory over Minnie Hauk and Daryz, last season’s champions of the Oaks and the Arc respectively. Jockey William Buick rode with remarkable ease in the final furlong, guiding the 11-10 favorite to a four-length lead at the finish line.

Pace Setters Challenge, But Ombudsman Prevails

For a brief period, it appeared the front-runners might again spark post-race discussions. Mississippi River and Devil’s Advocate, leading the charge for Aidan O’Brien and John & Thady Gosden’s Ombudsman, established a significant early advantage. While Mississippi River faded turning for home, Devil’s Advocate maintained a strong lead at the two-furlong pole. However, by the final furlong, the race was effectively decided, with Ombudsman surging ahead to replicate his triumph in the same race a year prior. Minnie Hauk and Daryz attempted to match his blistering pace but ultimately fell short.

Trainer Praises Phenomenal Turn of Foot

John Gosden, trainer of Ombudsman, expressed his admiration for the horse’s exceptional acceleration. “Devil’s Advocate, a furlong and a half to go I thought they have to get to him,” Gosden stated. “But this horse has got a phenomenal turn of foot, great acceleration for a mile-and-a-quarter horse and he just showed that class. It’s quite something to come away from the field like that. The filly [Minnie Hauk] ran great, the Arc winner [Daryz] ran great. Probably [Almaqam] might not have run his race but overall, it was one of the great performances of his career.”

Future Plans for Ombudsman and Rivals

While the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown in early July is a potential next step, Gosden indicated that Ombudsman might instead target the International Stakes at York in mid-August. “We’ll watch him for the next week or 10 days and the horse will tell you,” Gosden explained. “You just watch, you know their habits, when they’re 100% and when they’re a little quiet. The Juddmonte International would be the major target of course. He likes York.”

Aidan O’Brien was pleased with Minnie Hauk’s performance, seeing it as a strong return after a disappointing run in May. He believes she is best suited to a mile and a half. “We thought what happened the last day was that she’s really a mile-and-a-half filly,” O’Brien commented. “And over a mile-and-a-quarter [on Wednesday] she wanted an end-to-end gallop. Obviously, that was going to suit the winner as well.” He suggested potential runs in the King George at Ascot and the Arc for Minnie Hauk.

Francis-Henri Graffard, trainer of Daryz, attributed his horse’s performance to the race tactics. “They had these two pacemakers that went forward quite clear and my horse was not covered,” Graffard said. “He never really relaxed and had a chance to take a breath. I don’t think he relaxed through the race; he was out of his rhythm all the time, and that’s why he shortened up his action at the end. We didn’t see the Daryz of Longchamp, when he was nice and relaxed and quickened really strongly.”

Early Success for O’Brien at Royal Meeting

The day began with trainer Aidan O’Brien securing his 99th winner at the Royal Meeting with Victorious in the Queen Mary Stakes. This marked his second consecutive Queen Mary victory. Victorious’s impressive win has led to early speculation for next year’s Classics, with odds shortening significantly.

Victorious’s success also offers a positive outlook for O’Brien’s other contender, Sun Goddess, in the Albany Stakes. “Victorious is very classy,” O’Brien remarked. “She only has sight in one eye, so we were a little worried about where she was drawn [on the far side], but Ryan [Moore] was brilliant on her. He reassured her and let her find her way through. He got a little group to follow and then took her to the outside.”

Royal Silks and Notable Contenders

The King & Queen’s colours saw mixed fortunes, with Point Of Law performing respectably but Reaching High finishing last in the Ascot Stakes. Their next runner, Golden Orbit, is set to compete in the Ribblesdale Stakes.

Potential Upsets and Promising Prospects

Carmers is highlighted as an each-way contender at generous odds for Thursday’s Gold Cup, potentially challenging the reigning champion Trawlerman. Despite Trawlerman’s proven talent, Carmers’s recent form and scope for improvement make him an interesting prospect.

Other notable mentions include Sea Venture, a decisive debut winner with a promising pedigree; Heyzoom, who may be underestimated by handicappers; and Earth Shot, presented as an attractive alternative in a competitive handicap.
