Tottenham Hotspur Joins Pursuit of Highly-Rated Midfielder Mateus Fernandes
Tottenham Hotspur has emerged as the latest contender in the race to sign sought-after West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes. The 21-year-old Portuguese talent has attracted significant interest from several major European clubs this summer, including Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain.
West Ham Faces Financial Deadline for Sale
The escalating interest in Fernandes is expected to provide a financial boost for West Ham, who are reportedly seeking approximately £85 million for the player. This potential transfer comes as the club faces a crucial June 30 accounting deadline. While Daniel Kretinsky, who is set to become West Ham’s largest shareholder following David Sullivan’s departure, has indicated no immediate need to sell, the club’s financial situation suggests otherwise.
West Ham recorded losses of £104.2 million in the previous financial year, and with their recent relegation to the Championship, the club is anticipating another significant deficit for the 2025-26 period. Current profit and sustainability regulations limit losses to £105 million over a three-year span.
Tottenham’s Summer Recruitment Drive
Under manager Roberto De Zerbi, Tottenham has been actively strengthening its squad. The club has already secured the services of defender Jan Paul van Hecke for £52 million from Brighton. Additionally, Scotland captain Andy Robertson and Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi have joined on free transfers as part of a broader squad overhaul ahead of the upcoming season.
Reports also indicate that Tottenham has engaged in discussions with the camp of Sandro Tonali, though they face competition from other clubs, including Manchester City, who view the Italian as a secondary option.
Manchester United’s Interest and Player’s Appeal
Last week, it was reported that Manchester United was leading the pursuit of Fernandes. The club reportedly declined to enter a bidding war with Manchester City for another player, having seen a substantial offer rejected. While a formal bid has not yet been submitted for Fernandes, discussions with the player’s representatives have taken place. It is understood that personal terms are unlikely to be an obstacle, with the prospect of Champions League football next season serving as a significant draw for the player.
Fernandes’s Performance and Contract Status
Despite not being included in Portugal’s World Cup squad, Mateus Fernandes is recognized as one of Europe’s most promising midfield talents. During the 2025-26 season, he contributed five goals and five assists in 42 appearances across all competitions for West Ham. He was also a contender for the club’s Player of the Season award, which was ultimately won by defender Konstantinos Mavropanos. Fernandes’s current contract with West Ham extends until 2030, and it does not include a release clause.
