Pickford’s Goalkeeping Questioned Ahead of England’s World Cup Push

England’s Opening World Cup Performance Analyzed

England kicked off their 2026 World Cup campaign with a commanding performance, netting four goals against Croatia. Harry Kane demonstrated his potent form, finding the back of the net twice, while Jude Bellingham showcased his individual brilliance with a notable solo effort. Noni Madueke also impressed, earning a penalty before being substituted for Bukayo Saka, who later assisted Marcus Rashford for the final goal.

Despite the attacking prowess on display, defensive frailties were evident. Marc Guehi’s unexpected omission from the starting lineup coincided with the team conceding two goals in the first half. While the defense eventually stabilized, the initial shakiness has raised some concerns.

Pundit Expresses Doubts Over Goalkeeper’s World Cup Readiness

Amidst the overall positive start, pundit Troy Deeney has voiced significant reservations about goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s ability to lead England to World Cup glory. Speaking after the match, Deeney articulated his concerns regarding Pickford’s goalkeeping style.

Deeney stated, “To say the least, yeah. I don’t really know the stats and all of that. I’m just saying what my eyes told me.” He specifically pointed to the first Croatian goal, expressing his belief that Pickford should have made the save. “I think when you get a hand to it, it’s got to be a solid hand and keep it out,” Deeney commented.

Concerns Over Pickford’s On-Field Demeanor

The former player also highlighted a perceived erraticism in Pickford’s game. “There’s just that feeling when I watch Jordan…there’s a shot from 50 yards and it trickles to him and he’s screaming at everyone, ‘Do your job! Don’t let any shots come in!’ Every time he parries one, fouls someone, does whatever, he’s like, ‘Don’t look at me!'” Deeney observed.

Pickford’s International Experience vs. Deeney’s Assessment

Pickford, who has earned 85 caps for the Three Lions, has been the nation’s starting goalkeeper for three consecutive World Cups and has featured in two European Championship finals. Despite this extensive experience, Deeney remains unconvinced about his capacity to be the decisive factor in winning a World Cup.

“We’re trying to win a World Cup. That’s why we’re here. In my opinion, and respectfully Jordan, because you know I like you. We can’t win it with that guy in goal. He doesn’t give you any confidence,” Deeney asserted.

The assessment from Deeney stands in contrast to Pickford’s consistent tenure as England’s number one, a role he has maintained under both Gareth Southgate and his successor, Thomas Tuchel. Furthermore, Pickford recently set an English record by going 10 matches without conceding a goal across games in 2024 and 2025, suggesting his position is likely secure.
