British Boxer Replaced in World Title Bout Over Travel Complications
Joe Cordina has been dramatically withdrawn from his upcoming world title fight against American contender Abdullah Mason due to unforeseen visa complications. The Welsh former super-featherweight champion was scheduled to challenge for Mason’s WBO lightweight strap on July 4th in Cleveland, Ohio.
New Challenger Steps In Amidst Travel Hurdles
Reports indicate that Albert Bell has now been selected as Cordina’s replacement for the highly anticipated bout. Sources confirm that a visa issue prevented Cordina from traveling to the United States for the fight, leading to the eleventh-hour change.
Cordina Expresses Disappointment Over Missed Opportunity
Cordina, 34, shared his profound disappointment on social media. “I was due to fly to the United States this week,” he stated. “A couple of days back I went to the US embassy in London and they basically denied me a visa. I tried to explain certain things, and had all the paperwork to back it up, and they weren’t having it. They just sort of basically told me you aren’t getting in, so it’s on my hands.”
He added, “Absolutely gutted, because it’s my chance to become a three-time, two-weight world champion, plus fight for a world title in America, which was a goal of mine.”
Cordina previously held the IBF title before losing it to Anthony Cacace in May 2024. He has since moved up to the 135lb division, securing two consecutive victories.
Undefeated Bell Faces Mason for Lightweight Strap
Abdullah Mason, 22, claimed the WBO lightweight championship after defeating Sam Noakes last November. His new challenger, Albert Bell, 33, brings an undefeated record of 28 professional fights to the ring.
