Lionel Messi’s Character Praised by Beckham and Neymar

Published on

Lionel Messi’s character and conduct away from the football pitch have drawn praise from prominent figures who have shared dressing rooms with him, notably David Beckham and Neymar. This comes as Messi continues to lead Argentina in the World Cup, recently guiding them to the quarter-finals with a series of impressive performances and goals.

Messi’s World Cup Heroics

The Argentine superstar has been instrumental in his nation’s World Cup campaign, netting eight goals thus far. His latest contribution was crucial in a dramatic 3-2 victory over Egypt in the quarter-finals. Trailing 2-0 with just eleven minutes remaining in regulation time, Argentina staged a remarkable comeback. Goals from Cristian Romero, Messi himself, and Enzo Fernandez secured their progression. The emotional victory saw the 39-year-old visibly moved, celebrating with teammates and receiving accolades from fans worldwide.

Insights from Inter Miami and Former Teammates

While Messi’s on-field brilliance is universally acknowledged, his demeanor off the pitch is a subject of particular interest. David Beckham, co-owner of Inter Miami where Messi currently plays his club football, and Neymar, who was a teammate at both Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, have offered insights into his character.

Following the intense quarter-final match, Beckham took to social media to express his admiration. Sharing a photograph of Messi, Beckham posted, “He is a very special human. Not just because of what he does on the pitch but who he is off it.” In a subsequent post, he added, “Nothing more to say,” accompanied by another image of the player.

These sentiments align closely with those expressed by Neymar earlier in the tournament. Speaking to DSports, the Brazilian forward stated, “Leo is a much better person off the field. He’s good on the field, imagine what he’s like off it. That’s why I’m so glad I played with him. He’s a great friend. We talk a lot. He knows I love him very much.” Both Beckham and Neymar’s comments underscore a consistent view of Messi as a person of integrity and positive character beyond his athletic achievements.

Controversy Surrounds Argentina’s Victory

Despite the widespread praise for Messi, Argentina’s hard-fought victory over Egypt was not without controversy. Egypt’s coaching staff and players expressed significant frustration with several key decisions made during the match. At a point when Egypt was leading 1-0, a second-half goal was disallowed following a VAR review. Furthermore, a penalty appeal for Mohamed Salah, following a challenge by Alexis Mac Allister in the build-up to Argentina’s winning goal, was reportedly not reviewed by the officials.

Egypt’s head coach, Hossam Hassan, voiced his strong dissatisfaction, suggesting that external factors influenced the outcome. “We looked better than the reigning champions, better in everything, but the result was influenced by internal factors on the pitch and external factors off it,” Hassan stated. He further speculated, “Perhaps they wanted to keep the world champion in the competition. Perhaps they wanted Messi to stay in the running.” Hassan concluded by remarking on perceived pressures, stating, “In football, there are sometimes external factors that go beyond the technical aspects. The world champion received support at every level. There seem to be pressures from the Argentina side on this outcome.”

Looking Ahead to the Quarter-Finals

With their quarter-final victory secured, Argentina is now preparing for their next challenge in the tournament. Their upcoming match is against Switzerland. The game is scheduled to kick off at 2 am UK time on Sunday. A victory in this fixture would see Argentina advance to the semi-finals, where they could potentially face England, provided England secures a win in their own quarter-final match against Norway.

The focus now shifts to the latter stages of the World Cup, with Messi continuing to be a central figure both on and off the field, as evidenced by the ongoing discussions about his character and leadership.
