Sir Chris Hoy Looks Forward to Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

Published on

Six-time Olympic cycling champion Sir Chris Hoy is anticipating the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, expressing a hope that the event will inspire his own children. The Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, named in his honor, will once again be a central venue for the multi-sport competition. Hoy, widely regarded as one of Scotland’s and Britain’s greatest athletes, plans to attend as many events as possible with his son, Callum (11), and daughter, Chloe (8).

Family Inspiration at the Velodrome

Despite his immense sporting achievements, Hoy admits that impressing his children is a challenge. He shared that on previous visits to the velodrome, his children were not particularly awestruck by seeing his name on the building. “They weren’t that impressed last time by the fact that their dad’s name was on the side of the building,” Hoy recalled. “But they’re now eight and eleven so hopefully they’ll appreciate it a little bit more now.” He hopes that attending the Games will provide them with a greater understanding and appreciation of his career and the world of elite sport.

A Public Figure Facing Personal Challenges

Beyond his athletic legacy, Sir Chris Hoy has recently been in the public eye due to his diagnosis of stage 4 prostate cancer. Despite this significant personal health battle, Hoy maintains a positive outlook and continues to engage in public life. His appearances are characterized by humility and a lack of self-pity, focusing instead on positivity and encouraging others. He recently visited ‘Glasgow The Caring City,’ a charity in Govan, to mark the milestone of National Lottery funding surpassing £1 billion in the city since 1994. A mural celebrating Hoy in his racing prime now adorns a wall at the charity’s space.

Enduring Popularity and a Passion for Challenge

Thirteen years after retiring from professional cycling, Hoy remains a beloved and recognizable figure. Even among younger generations who may not have witnessed his peak performances, his popularity is evident in the requests for photos and conversations. He continues to undertake demanding physical challenges, demonstrating remarkable resilience. Recently, he completed a week-long charity cycling trip across Spain alongside Tour de France legend Miguel Indurain, cycling for over six hours daily. This endeavor followed a broken leg from a mountain biking accident, highlighting his persistent drive and commitment
