Holly Willoughby Launches YouTube Show, Citing Evolving Media Habits

Published on

Former television presenter Holly Willoughby is embarking on a new chapter in her career with the launch of her YouTube series, ‘Holly Willoughby Together’. This move marks her first major television-style project in approximately 18 months, signaling a significant shift in her approach to content creation and audience engagement. Willoughby described the decision to debut her show on the streaming platform as a “brave” and unconventional choice.

Shifting Media Consumption Drives YouTube Move

At a recent launch event, Willoughby elaborated on the inspiration behind her YouTube venture. She observed the evolving media consumption habits of her own children, noting their preference for platforms like YouTube and Netflix. This observation prompted her to reflect on her own media intake, which often involves multitasking across different applications and devices.

“The YouTube idea obviously I’ve been away for a little while and my kids, watching my kids how they use stuff now, you know they watch stuff on YouTube they watch stuff on Netflix that’s how they do things,” Willoughby explained. “I was like right how am I watching stuff now and I was walking the dog and I’d be listening to Spotify or a podcast and I’d come in and I’d start cooking lunch and then I’d be like oh watch that now.”

This personal reflection led her to a broader realization: “You suddenly realise that the way you see and view things and watch things is very very different. I don’t feel like it’s just me, I feel like everybody’s doing the same sort of thing.” This understanding of contemporary viewing patterns was a key factor in her decision.

Mainstream TV vs. Digital Platforms

Willoughby, a mother of three, expressed her belief that success is no longer confined to traditional mainstream television. She pointed to examples of established figures embracing diverse platforms, such as Gary Lineker’s collaborations with Netflix and music ventures, and the dual consumption of content across platforms like BBC Radio 2 and podcasts.

“You see what Gary Lineker has just done with the World Cup, you know collaborating with Netflix and with music, people will go on Radio 2 but then they’ll also go on a podcast,” she stated. This highlights a growing trend where audiences fluidly move between different media formats.

The presenter emphasized the importance of taking calculated risks and exploring options beyond the most obvious choices. “I think being a little bit braver and not just going for the obvious options, is the thing that really got me and then I thought ‘yes.’ I thought ‘That’s it, that’s what I want to do.’” This mindset was instrumental in her commitment to the YouTube project.

‘Holly Willoughby Together’: Format and Content

Willoughby stepped back from her role on ITV’s This Morning in October 2023. While she made a brief appearance on Dancing on Ice, she has largely maintained a lower profile over the past year and a half. Her new YouTube series, set to premiere on July 28th, adopts a format reminiscent of her previous daytime television work.

The show will feature two episodes released weekly, covering a range of topics including cookery, lifestyle, fashion, beauty, and personal stories. A significant element of the series will be its celebrity interviews, bringing a familiar star-studded appeal to the digital platform.

Confirmed Guests and Production

Several notable personalities have already been confirmed to appear on ‘Holly Willoughby Together’. Guests slated to join Willoughby include actor Stanley Tucci, Spice Girls member Emma Bunton, All Saints singer Nicole Appleton, and comedians Joanne McNally and Katherine Ryan. This lineup suggests a blend of entertainment, culinary expertise, and comedic talent.

The series is being produced by Hungry Bear Media, a company headed by Willoughby’s husband, Dan Baldwin. The show’s structure is built around five core themes, each reflected in the title: Talk Together, Cook Together, Look Good Together, Better, and Hang Out Together. This thematic approach aims to provide a cohesive and engaging viewing experience for the audience.

The Future of Digital Content Creation

Holly Willoughby’s transition to YouTube underscores a broader trend within the media industry, where established broadcasters and creators are exploring digital platforms to connect with audiences, particularly younger demographics who are increasingly consuming content online. The move allows for greater creative freedom and direct interaction with viewers, moving away from the constraints of traditional broadcast schedules and formats.

By embracing YouTube, Willoughby is positioning herself to adapt to the evolving landscape of entertainment. The platform offers
