Jubilant Sykes Autopsy: Opera Singer Stabbed 78 Times, Son Charged

Published on

A recently unsealed autopsy report has revealed harrowing details surrounding the death of Grammy-nominated opera singer Jubilant Sykes. The report indicates the celebrated baritone sustained 78 stab wounds in a brutal attack at his Santa Monica, California, home on December 8, 2025. His son, Micah Sykes, has been arrested and charged in connection with the slaying.

Autopsy Details Gruesome Attack

The Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner’s report, obtained by Us Weekly, details the extensive injuries sustained by Jubilant Sykes, who was 71 at the time of his death. The official cause of death was ruled as multiple stab wounds. The report specifies that Sykes suffered a minimum of 73 sharp force injuries and five blunt force injuries. Two weapons were reportedly recovered from the scene: a curved knife approximately 9 inches long and 2 inches wide, and a 10-pound dumbbell with apparent bloodstains.

Toxicology tests conducted as part of the autopsy did not reveal the presence of any illicit or prescribed drugs in Sykes’s system. The Medical Examiner officially classified the death as a homicide.

Son Arrested for Father’s Murder

Micah Sykes, the 32-year-old son of Jubilant Sykes, was arrested shortly after the incident. He faces murder charges in his father’s death. According to the autopsy report, Jubilant Sykes’s wife, Cecelia Sykes, witnessed the attack. She reportedly called 9-1-1 after hearing her husband cry out for help. Mrs. Sykes stated that she was in the shower when the incident began and emerged to see her son standing over her husband, stabbing him with a weapon.

During a court appearance in February, Micah Sykes made an outburst, interrupting prosecutors and asking for his mother. A judge ordered him held without bail. Prosecutors noted Micah’s documented history of mental illness, stating he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and was reportedly not adhering to his prescribed medication regimen. He was described as homeless and residing at his parents’ home.

Court Proceedings and Mental Health Concerns

In court, Deputy District Attorney Cesar Rodriguez informed Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Theresa R. McGonigle that Micah’s mother was a witness to the fatal attack and is now protected by a court-issued no-contact order. The judge set bail at $2 million, which was granted, and delayed the arraignment.

Prosecutors also highlighted concerns regarding Micah’s mental health, indicating he was either under-medicated or not following medical advice for his schizophrenia. He was described as homeless and staying at his parents’ residence. A prosecutor mentioned that other family members were present and wished to convey their love for the defendant.

Past Allegations and Neighborhood Concerns

In the days following the incident, past allegations of violent and erratic behavior by Micah Sykes resurfaced. A restraining order obtained in 2017 by a woman named Sarah Bennett, on behalf of herself and friends, detailed accusations of fixation and attempted forced entry into a home. Bennett alleged that Micah had become fixated on her, believing her to be his ‘true love,’ and had repeatedly contacted her. The filing also claimed he had previously been violent with his own family.

A neighborhood insider reportedly told news outlets that Micah was not living with his father at the time of the killing and had been observed wandering the area, exhibiting nonsensical behavior and speech. This insider also suggested that Jubilant Sykes loved his son and had recently expressed hope for his well-being.

Jubilant Sykes: A Renowned Artistic Career

Jubilant Sykes was a highly respected baritone whose career spanned several decades and garnered international acclaim. He received a Grammy nomination in 2009 for his performance in a recording of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass. His career included performances at prestigious venues such as the Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Hollywood Bowl, and London’s Barbican Centre.

Sykes collaborated with a diverse range of artists, including Julie Andrews, Josh Groban, Carlos Santana, and Brian Wilson. Despite his professional success, those who knew him described him as deeply devoted to his community and family. He and his wife, Cecelia, had three sons.

Incident Details and Community Impact

Police responded to an assault call at the Sykes residence on Delaware Avenue around 9:20 p.m. on December 8, 2025. Upon arrival, officers found Jubilant Sykes suffering from critical injuries consistent with a stabbing. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Micah Sykes was found inside the home and taken into custody without incident. Authorities characterized the killing as a domestic incident, assuring the community that there was no ongoing threat.

The court later imposed a no-contact order between Micah and his mother, who was present in the home during the attack and made the 9-1-1 call. The incident has sent shockwaves through the artistic community and beyond, highlighting the tragic intersection of artistic achievement and personal struggle.
