49ers Assistant Coach Chris Foerster Discusses Past Struggles

Published on

San Francisco 49ers assistant head coach Chris Foerster has stepped into a more prominent role during training camp, stepping in for head coach Kyle Shanahan following a serious car accident. Foerster, who has been with the organization since 2019, has openly addressed his past struggles with substance abuse as he takes on increased responsibilities.

Shanahan’s Recovery and Foerster’s Increased Role

Kyle Shanahan was involved in a collision with an SUV near his Palo Alto home on July 14. The incident resulted in significant injuries, including a broken nose, three fractured ribs, a broken hand, a severe concussion, and over 40 stitches to his face. While Shanahan is on the path to recovery and was observed watching practice on Sunday, his physical limitations mean he will have a reduced capacity during the initial stages of training camp. In his absence, Foerster, a longtime associate of Shanahan, is expected to play a larger part in coaching duties, supported by new defensive coordinator Raheem Morris.

Foerster’s Public Acknowledgment of Past Drug Use

Foerster’s past came under public scrutiny in October 2017 when a video surfaced showing him snorting a white powdery substance. The clip, reportedly posted by an individual described as his alleged mistress, depicted Foerster preparing and consuming lines of the substance before a meeting with the Miami Dolphins, where he was serving as offensive line coach. The video was quickly removed from the platform where it was initially shared.

At the time, Foerster was one of the highest-paid assistant coaches in the NFL. Following the emergence of the video, he resigned from his position with the Dolphins and entered a rehabilitation program. He later disclosed to NFL Network that he had used cocaine for eight to nine consecutive days leading up to the incident during the 2017 season.

Support and Second Chances in the NFL

Despite the public controversy, Shanahan offered Foerster a consulting position with the 49ers in 2019. The two coaches have a history of working together, having previously been on staff in Washington from 2010 to 2013, alongside current Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay.

Foerster has steadily progressed within the 49ers organization, moving from assistant offensive-line coach in 2020 to offensive-line coach in 2021, and now taking on interim head coaching responsibilities. Reflecting on the support he received, Foerster stated after his first practice in the expanded role, “This organization did some things for me and pulled me in at a time in my life when nobody would really want to be with me.”

Foerster’s Personal Connection to Shanahan

Foerster expressed deep loyalty and affection for Kyle Shanahan, describing their relationship as familial. “I’m not gonna cry up here, but the thing is, the guy is family to me,” Foerster shared. “I’ve known Kyle for a long time. He’s one of my best friends in the world. There’s not many people that I call friend. But Kyle is one of them.”

Shanahan’s Condition and Recovery

Shanahan was hospitalized following the car crash but was released the same day. Reports indicate the driver of the other vehicle was unharmed, and that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the collision. Dispatch audio from the incident revealed that one driver sustained a head injury.

NFL insider Chris Simms provided further details on Shanahan’s injuries, relaying information from Shanahan’s wife, Mandy. Simms described the injuries as “grisly,” noting that Shanahan was fortunate to avoid losing his eyesight, with the facial lacerations being particularly severe. While his facial injuries are healing and his appearance has improved, Simms indicated that Shanahan is still dealing with lingering effects from the concussion sustained in the accident.

Conclusion

As Chris Foerster navigates his expanded role with the San Francisco 49ers, his candidness about his past struggles and his strong personal bond with Kyle Shanahan highlight the complex dynamics within the team. The focus remains on Shanahan’s recovery and the team’s preparation for the upcoming season under interim leadership.
