Georgia Voll Returns to Australia Amid Cricket Cheating Scandal

Published on

Cricketer Georgia Voll has returned to Australia, maintaining a low profile as she re-enters the domestic scene following a widely publicized cheating scandal involving her relationship with Australian vice-captain Ashleigh Gardner. Voll, 21, was seen on Thursday strolling along the Brisbane River in Newstead, dressed casually in a black hoodie and white baseball cap, accompanied by fellow cricketer Caitlin Mair. This marks her first appearance on Australian soil since allegations surrounding her relationship with Gardner surfaced globally.

Georgia Voll’s Return to Play

Voll reportedly arrived in Australia on Wednesday after concluding her commitments in the UK cricket season with the Welsh Fire team. She is expected to rejoin her club, the Sandgate-Redcliffe Gators, with potential appearances scheduled as early as Thursday night and another on Saturday. Her return to the pitch comes mere weeks after the controversy surrounding her relationship with Gardner became a major news item.

The Scandal Unfolds

The controversy gained significant traction when details of the relationship between Gardner and Voll emerged. Monica Wright, Gardner’s estranged wife, publicly accused Gardner of infidelity, sharing a photo of Voll on social media with the caption, “This is who my wife cheated on me with.” This accusation was subsequently amplified across social media platforms and reported by various international media outlets, reaching a vast audience.

Reports indicate that the marital difficulties between Gardner and Wright began to surface after the India tour for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. A source close to the situation described an atmosphere of awkwardness during the tour when Wright visited Gardner in India. “It was a little bit weird,” the insider commented, adding that Gardner seemed unlike herself, which was initially attributed to the pressures of the World Cup.

Relationship Breakdown and Personal Impact

Following their return to Sydney after the World Cup, Gardner and Wright reportedly had a significant conversation. According to a source, Gardner disclosed the reasons for her recent behavior, leaving Wright reportedly “shattered” and “distraught.” This conversation is understood to have effectively ended their marriage. The split was particularly devastating for Wright, as the couple had been discussing plans to start a family and had a scheduled appointment at a fertility clinic, which Wright subsequently had to cancel.

Gardner is said to have moved out of the couple’s shared home in November, leaving behind only their wedding rings. Wright, who had been a part of the cricket community for approximately five years and maintained good relationships with many players, was reportedly devastated. Many players expressed their upset to Wright, with some reportedly sending messages conveying their concern and disappointment.

Official Awareness and Cricket Australia’s Stance

It is understood that Cricket Australia was made aware of the marriage breakdown. A disclosure was reportedly made to the National Selection Panel (NSP) around the time Gardner was appointed captain of the Sydney Sixers in the Women’s Big Bash League shortly after her split from Wright. Gardner was later appointed co-vice-captain of the national team earlier this year.

When contacted for comment regarding the situation, Cricket Australia’s senior communications chief, Richard Hinds, stated, “Yeah, no comment on that.” Gardner was also approached for comment.

Background of Gardner and Wright’s Relationship

Ashleigh Gardner and Monica Wright met through a dating app in 2020. They became engaged in April 2024 and married in a ceremony in the Blue Mountains in April 2025. The relationship’s public unraveling has sent ripples through the Southern Stars team, given Wright’s long-standing connections within the squad.

Georgia Voll’s return to the Australian domestic cricket scene places her back in the spotlight following the intense media scrutiny. Her focus will now shift to resuming her playing career with the Sandgate-Redcliffe Gators as the sport navigates the fallout from the scandal.
